St. Louis Shaving Soaps

I went up to St. Louis over the weekend to do some shopping and to take SWMBO to the Fox for a performance of Wicked. We stopped into the Whole Foods Market in Brentwood, so I decided to see what they had in terms of shaving goodies. I saw some local made soaps from Herbaria and beside that a section of shaving soaps. They had a selection of Bay Rum & Jojoba, Mint & Hemp Seed and Lime & Coconut. I decided to grab a puck of the Bay Rum. It lathers up rather nicely and gave me a good cushion. Plus the smell is rather pleasant. Not too overwhelming, which was nice. I will be putting it into my rotation without question! One puck is $7.50, which I thought was rather good for its size. Nice thick puck that is just under 4 oz I believe. They have a full variety of soaps as well, so if you're in the St Louis area, I would recommend checking them out sometime. I do believe you can order them online as well, but I haven't explored their website much yet.

I am going to have to head back into my local whole foods store. Last time I was in they only carried KMF an a few other, main stream grocery store type, soaps and creams

Or you can go directly to Herbaria. It is located on Marconi on The Hill, directly across from Milo's tavern and 1/2 block from St. Ambrose church. The owner, Louis (call him Gino), is a great guy. All of his soaps are made there, and you can watch a soapmaking demonstration. I just finished a bar of the bay rum. While it is nice soap, it doesn't build as thick of a lather as I would like. He only makes three shaving soap varieties, and his soaps are all tallow-free. He makes a TON of other soaps, however. If you want to try something unusual, try his tomato soap. And use it to shave with. It is the slickest soap I've ever tried. Other products of his that are fantastic are "Ant Away" (a natural, cinnamon-based ant repellant...we use it safely in the kitchen) and his natural insect repellant (available as a soap and as a spray, made of marigold and citronella). The price at Whole Foods is the same as his price at the shop. You can also buy online from him at http://www.herbariasoap.com. BTW, his dog is named Soapy.

Very cool! Thanks for the heads up on that, Chris. Next time I'm up that way, I'll have to stop into his store. Tomato soap? Oh wow! I don't think I would have ever imagined tomato and soap together hahaha but it does sound intriguing.
