It was a very proud moment to sign my first mortgage papers with my grandfathers 51'. My father was also very moved by this as his father passed when he was young and even though I never met him I still get to honor him by using his parker.
Nice!

Yeah, that makes sense. Can I assume that a vac will hold more ink than an aero?Reliability, and cost of manufacture. The Vacs had moving parts, which complicated the mechanism, and made servicing more of an issue as well. This has been pretty much proven by time, since a majority of Aerometrics found in the wild will work with little more than a flush and clean. Vacs usually need to be stripped down, diaphragms replaced, etc.
Having said that, once the vacs are serviced they write just as well.

Safe assumption... but not much more, and IMHO not worth the finickiness of it. If that is the reason for the purchaseYeah, that makes sense. Can I assume that a vac will hold more ink than an aero?
Let me ask this, then- if two pens were in identical (good) condition, and the price were the same, which would you buy- vac or aero? Is this even a valid question on my part? Any insight from the affirmed 51 expert would be greatly appreciated.Safe assumption... but not much more, and IMHO not worth the finickiness of it. If that is the reason for the purchase

It depends on your definition of good condition. If you found them in an antique store, and they both looked in good condition, you would get the aerometric. Much safer bet. If they both came from a reliable pen person who has serviced them, and guarantees the work... I dunno. Get the colour you like best.
I use both, but I trust my vacs because the ones I use I serviced myself. I certainly wouldn't find one in the wild, try it once with water, and then stick it in my pocket full of ink.
Thanks for the answer, David. James nails down what I was trying to say- I wanted to remove condition from the equation, both freshly services from a reliable source. Or a serviceable pen from a trusted member. For instance, if I somehow got Brian to let loose of oneI believe Owen was trying to remove condition from the equation and see which system was preferable, as in if you were to buy them newly made which style would you want having experienced both
Okay, thanks David. I will expand my hunt accordingly. Then I really don't think there would be an outright advantage to either. Possibly the Aerometric would be more reliable in the long run, but we would be talking many years, or decades before you could expect the new diaphragm to fail.
Edit: Also, If you are carrying it on a plane I think the Aerometric is less likely to burp ink, so there is that as well. Not sure if that would be an issue for you.
Thanks for the input.IMHO... All things being equal... the Aerometric. Theres alot to be said about simplicity. The vac is hard to clean out, the Aero a lot easier. Some people like the Art Deco look of the caps of the Vac. It's also easier to find a barrel for a Aero if you need one.
With that being said, I probably have 2 to 1 on Vacs over Aero's. Why ? Has to do with price. I have picked up lot's of vacs for cheap because they will not fill. People charge more if they can squirt water out of them
Sometime I may decide to do a pen clearout, then again maybe not
If he releases his collection, there are going to be eBay sellers cussing himGive us a month heads' up so we can save our nickels
Watching this fill up would be neat
had no idea the 51s came in a demonstrator although they are not the most handsome of pens they sure are neat
Brian do you have any of these
