Spirit of the Month - July 2009 - Hendrick's Gin

Welcome to the B&B Speakeasy Spirit of the Month!

Hmmm. I see we haven't done a gin in awhile...

[imga=left]http://www.badgerandblade.com/forum/media/17695/full[/imga]Our selection for July 2009 will be Hendrick's Gin

A high-end, year-round favorite and a bit of a wildcard as far as gin is concerned. While most gins are distilled in England, Hendrick's is distilled in Girvan, Ayrshire in the lowlands of Scotland and is associated with the distillery that produces Glenfiddich. Unique to most gins, Hendrick's utilizes a process blending distillates from a traditional 1860's pot-still and a rare Carter Head still into their final product, along with cucumber and rose essence. There are thought to be only four Carter Head stills in use in the world, and Hendrick's dates to 1948.

The differences between the two types of stills are striking. In a pot still, the ingredients are boiled in neutral spirit and the distillate is collected from the vapors at the top of the column. This produces a strongly flavored, high-alcohol gin. In contrast, a Carter Head still removes the botanical ingredients from the spirit, placing them above the chamber and enveloping them in the vapors of the boiled spirit. This process produces a lighter, sweeter gin. Hendrick's blends these two products, adding cucumber and Bulgarian rose essences, producing a uniquely flavored 88-proof spirit. The final piece of this peculiar gin lies in it's distinctive apothecary-style brown bottle.

Hendrick's is usually available in the $35 range for a 750mL bottle.

Suggested cocktails:

Martini

Tom Collins

Lime Rickeys: 2:1 gin to lime juice over ice, top with soda. Popular with flavored syrups.

Gimlets

There've been a lot of gin threads lately, hopefully this will be a popular and lively discussion. And as always, you can check out all of our past B&B Classic Cocktails on the Wiki here!

Cheers!

An interesting drink with this one: Take a rocks glass and muddle a peeled cucumber slice or two. Then add ice and fill with Hendricks. A pleasant little gin on the rocks.

Yessir, forgot to mention that. Hendrick's actually recommends cucumber as garnish instead of the traditional citrus.

You guys are reading my mind. I am having a Collins with Hendrick's as I type this.

This is the gin that taught me not to hate gin, after decades of refusing to drink it. Makes a fantastic Tom Collins (trust me on this), is great with tonic, and 3:1 with Noilly Prat is the only martini I'll drink. Really a great product.

When making a martini how do you garnish it? Olives? Citrus? Cucumber?

I think citrus works so much better with Hendrick's. I use a lemon twist. Personally I think the brininess of olives detract from the drink, but of course I am an iconoclast.

Well I didn't realize Hendricks was going to be the July selection and I went and bought my bottle last month! Oh well.

I still enjoyed three fine G&Ts with Hendricks and diet tonic last night.

Great stuff.

I am almost done with my bottle of Hendrick's. Tonight I had an old-school martini: 3 parts Hendrick's, 1 part Vya sweet vermouth, stirred lovingly and served with homemade maraschino cherries. Unfortunately I have no orange bitters (for shame!), so it wasn't a full fledged Martinez cocktail.

You guys know I am a Manhattan guy, but this drink was absolutely stellar. I challenge Castlecraver and anyone else listening to mix this up and report back in this thread. Great stuff.

The only sweet vermouth I have on hand right now is Cinzano... but I was able to toss in the Fee's orange bitters. Absolutely superb cocktail. Overwhelmingly flavorful -- a distinct departure from the crisp dryness of my usual martini. And IMHO it wouldn't work with a "bitey-er" gin like Brokers. The Hendrick's makes it. Makes me wish I had the homemade cherries to really make it perfect. Great idea for this thread Scotto... wish I'd thought of it. :thumbup1:

This.

I topped off with tonic, though, and added a couple more cucumber slices as garnish. I'm not generally a fan of gin, but I've just made a definite, and permanent, exception---that was as refreshing a summer cocktail as I've ever had! Very tasty!

What excellent timing. It's 6pm, I have some new G&T glasses to christen, a lime to use up and an open bottle of Hendricks. Sorted.

Round 2 . . . after several enjoyable forays into Hendrick's cucumber & tonics, I decided to make the original version of one of my summertime vodka drinks.

With vodka, it's a Greyhound; with gin it's a Bulldog. Salt the rim of either and it's a Salty Dog, but except for margaritas, I'm not a fan of salted rims.

I have to say, with vodka this is just grapefruit juice with a kick . . . with Hendrick's, it's an actual cocktail. The interplay of flavors is both complex and very refreshing---nice!
