Spencer & Devon: thoughts?

http://www.spencerdevon.com/

So an advert bar showed up on my screen today, and out of curiosity I clicked it. I read through their stuff, and am certainly intrigued. Under US$30 for eight ounces of (what they say is) quality shave cream, with shea butter AND kaolin clay? Why faith and begorra, can this be true?!

Has anyone out there tried it? Is it good? Great? Superb? Fair? Okay? Terrible? I would love to hear!

I've seen their ads on B&B but have never heard or used them. I do see however that their prices are quite high. I have a hard time paying prices like that any more when there are great, lower cost alternatives.

I've used both, bull goose shaving had them on sale for half price a few weeks ago. Both smell and lather great.

Seems expensive, but when you consider it's an 8oz tub instead of the usual 4 or 5 oz. tub that ost products come in, it's not a bad deal. That said, I took advantage of the sale Bullgoose had recently and ordered the Sagebrush. Didin't like the scent so I sold it.

People who have tried them say they perform well. There were some complaints on another forum about the product separating into an ugly mess after they had it for a while.

I didn't realize that. Thanks for posting.

Hmm. With the Bullgoose sale it seems like it might be something to look into. For the price I could go a lot worse.

I used their spice scent this morning.
Good stuff. It lathers very easily and a little product goes a long way which with the huge size of the tub makes it a good bargain.
Decent performance. It's not Proraso Red or Speick but it's good.
Nice scent. To me it smells like rye and Grand Marnier with a dash of bitters. (though, it is a bit disturbing when you start hankering for a cocktail at 5:30 AM)

I've used it 5 or 6 times and have liked it every time. I decided this morning to use it every day for a week just to fully test it out. If they made a menthol version that was as cooling as QCS Vostock I would be all over it.

Bull Goose has it on sale for $18 but it seems they only have the sagebrush and unscented left. http://www.bullgooseshaving.net/spdeshcr.html

I bought a couple of unscented tubs from BullGoose and I have to say, I really like it. It didn't take any effort to whip it up and it gave me a really nice shave.

I have used the Sagebrush scent and the Unscented and I must say that both are very good creams. Makes rich, abundant lather and the 8 oz tub is huge and packed to the top.IMO,its a bargain at the retail peice and a steal when its on sale! The Sagebrush scent really smells like sagebrush. I know because I lived in Jackson,Wyoming around tons of sagebrush. I hope this new Irving,Tx based company makes a go of it because their creams are the real thing !

I got the spice from Phil at the $18 price and I'm pleased with the purchase. I don't know about the sagebrush, but his description of the spice was right on. I would be willing to buy it again.

.

How would you best describe the Spice scent loganpass? I love the Sagebrush and Unscented of this cream but I'd like to get a solid description of how the Spice one smells before I buy 8 oz. of it. I'm allergic to flowery or 'perfumy' strong scents but fine with anything citrus or mildly woodsy. Please let me know Any info you can give me will be much appreciated,

Craig

I'm about halfway through a jar of the Sagebrush and can't really claim to be a fan. The product is very loose (think yogurt-like) and tends to separate. And while the scent isn't unpleasant, I don't think it smells like true sage. And the scent doesn't linger very long, which I would normally ding a cream for. In this case, I consider it a plus. As far as lather, it takes a bit more product to get going, and the results are just ok. Volume of lather is fine, I just don't think it's near as slick as my T&H or AOS creams.

Overall, I see myself using too much product, just to get it used up. The tub is very nice looking though. YMMV, and all that.

I missed the Spice at Bullgoose. Bought the Sagebrush. I would buy a tub of Spice if there was some left at Phil's price given how much I like the Sagebrush.
The scent is weird in a way I like. Clears my sinuses a bit. The tendency of the cream to separate is there, and that's a slight minus, but it's no biggie to me. I bowl-lather with it, with a soaked brush, and the liquid that's separated doesn't change much about that experience.
I don't know what true sagebrush smells like, or if it's different from sage as a cooking spice.
I think it makes an amazing, protective lather, which really easy to generate. Slickness and cushion top-notch. I like.

I've been using the Spencer & Devon unscented for about a week now. I'll post a full review when I've been using it a bit longer, but my first impressions are very positive. It does have a much softer consistency than any other cream I've used, but that doesn't bother me. The smell of the unscented is very similar to the Simpson's Luxury Shaving Cream - kind of earthy and rather pleasant. I get very good lather, not as thick or quite as heavy as something like D.R. Harris or T&H, but excellent in its protective qualities. Very slick, very moisturizing. So far, I really like Spencer & Devon.

My only question is why a cream made in Texas has such a British-sounding name? No reason to hide that this fine product is made in America as far as I'm concerned.
