Speick Men Active Shaving Cream - Short Review

Well Gents,

Tested this product today finally, using my trusty little DR Harris silvertip, EJ Gold Razor (loaded with a feather) and finished with the gentlemens refinery ASB.

Usually i Gauge how well a product does, by how badly i need to use an aftershave afterwards to "calm the fire". Im not sure if its because i havent used a feather blade in a while but my face was certainly irritated (particularly from the alum block feedback). Anyway..

Ingrediants:
Potassium Stearate, Potassium Palmitate, Potassium Cocoate, Glycerin, Sodium Stearate, Sodium Palmitate, Sodium Cocoate, Potassium Myristate, Cetyl Palmitate, Beta Vulgaris (Beet) Root Extract, Hydrolyzed Corn Starch, Linoleic Acid, Linolenic Acid, Valeriana Celtica Extract, Poria Cocos Extract, Phragmites Kharka Extract, Parfum, Potassium Laurate, Sodium Myristate, Sodium Silicate, Sodium Thiosulfate, Citral, Citronellol, Geraniol, Limonene, Linalool

This cream is actually labelled "Vegan" as well ..

I tend to stick with more natural products, as I feel the same great results can be achieved "naturally" . Plus it also limits my selection from the market which pleases SWMBO

Face lathered as usual, the cream seems a bit more liquidy and does not have that pinkish hue that that the traditional cream has. It seemed to be a bit tricker to get a nice rich lather than the original too , but could have just been that day. It did last for a good 3 pass shave and had some more to go.

The scent really was lacking for me, i expected a bit more of a citrus tone, however it almost feels like its an unscented cream to me. I really had to "look" for a scent , fairly mild and neutral.

Again shave wise, the alum block stung alot, i had a few little nicks on my neck too , more than ive had in months, and how fast i went for my aftershave after rinsing the alum indicated to me that It did not protect me very well :(

Ill be giving this cream a few more tries and update this thread accordingly, but on first impression the classic is a better performer and has a nicer smell to me

Thanks for reading

Edit:

Folks who like unscented creams would probably not mind this , as its subtle.. also my face feels rather good a few hours later, will definately try this a few more times and update with each shave. Im thinking my lack of respect torwards the feather ended up in my nicks..

Edit 2:

"100% free from synthetic fragrances and colours, preservatives, silicones, parabens and mineral oil-based ingredients."

will definately update for sure, ill be using it exclusively for the next 5 shaves at least.

The scent now that i smell it more is kinda of mossy, with a background of mild citrus undertones i guess?

My wife was not particularly impressed with it either , but im more about the shave , especially given these ingrediants.

This link shows one of the ingredients that is exclusive to this new formula, "phragmites kharka". I found it interesting.

I checked out the list of ingrediants side by side to the classic and noted some other differences in this formula:

- Beet root extract - http://www.paulaschoice.com/cosmetic-ingredient-dictionary/definition/beet-root-extract. This one website speaks of using beetroot juice as a mask "a regular usage of beetroot helps your skin become flawless as it feeds your skin iron and other vitamins through the pores." I found this interesting.
- Poria COCOS extract (a chinese mushroom with potential anti inflammatory effects)- http://www.raysahelian.com/poriacocos.html
-lonoleic and lonelenic acid (omega 6 and 3 fatty acid)

Well ingrediants wise im pretty impressed , ill pop in a milder blade and update my review again.

Great review Talal !!....I am not surprised the scent is minimal, this looks to be marketed to those looking for a natural, sensitive formula...

having sensitive skin i can only hope it works well for me with a milder blade, stay tunes folks!

just realized this new formulation does not include the beeswax as in the classic, hence it is less thick , in my opinion.

I too received my Speick Men Active cream and aftershave lotion the other day.

So far I've used the cream for two shaves. As Talal mention there is very little scent straight out of the tube.
When lathered the scent comes out a bit more. To my nose it has a slightly lemony, herbal scent. I can pick
out the Speick but it is not as pronounced as the standard Speick Men shave cream. The lather was nice and
slick and my razor glided with ease.

Here are the results of my third lather with the cream.

I finished with the Speick Active after shave lotion. It has the same lemony herbal scent of the cream.
The scent doesn't seem linger like the standard Speick Aftershave Lotion, but it did leave my face
feeling soothed and moisturized.

I'll be using both products the rest of the week.

Nice review Talal, and thanks to you too Chris. I'm especially interested in the Speick aftershave, do you prefer the Active to the normal?

The Active cream sounds like it might be good for me too, I'm still getting some trouble with irritation occasionally and I'm starting to wonder if it might be a reaction to some of the products I've been using.

The scent of the Active splash is really growing on me. I find it to be more lemon like when applied but is dries down to a nice peppery herbal scent that I really enjoy.

And just like the normal splash it leaves my face feeling fantastic. It is hard for me to say which I like more because I really like both.

I guess I'll just grab whichever is cheapest then, thanks mate. Sounds like it's worth a look at some point though.

the scent is slightly growing on me too, but i do prefer the classic by far...

Cream wise, i had my 2nd shave, it lathered well (adjusted the water ratio a touch). I realized the beewax is not in there now (probably to get vegan certified) and so a touch more water and it gave way to the lather.. However once again after my shave my alum block feedback, really stung alot (not usual in my case). however on the plus side my face does feel really nice 30 mins + onwards...

will continue testing before giving my final decision..

One thing to note i am using more product than the usual thick classic cream.. to get the same lather, not sure if its the same with you Xillion..

alum block roared at me with dissaproval again, 3 times in a row. with a few little nicks again.. This is not common for me at all ...

Yea im afraid for me this cream isnt quite cutting it, i dont think ill be purchasing it again unfortunately.

Im sure it will work well for others, who have less sensitive skin

i thought id update this post.

I put aside this cream for a long time , but went back to it again after investigating its ingrediants and bieng very pleased with them.

some of the ingrediants of note:
-poria cocos - a mushroom used for inflammation and tumours amongst other things.
-phragmites karka - skin conditioner
-beet root extract - increases hydration levels

these ingrediants i believe are unique to this formula, it still contains the speick herb too.

The scent has grown on me a bit, mild earthy citrus, not incredibly but ive come to appreciate it now.

The past 3 shaves have been fabulous, not sure if the water has changed but the lather is more luxurious. i still noted that i need to use more than the original though. the past 3 shaves were very good, very smooth face after, minimal irritation.

I think it must have been the blades i was using at the time as i was experimenting with a bunch of different ones. Either that or ive perfected my technique :)

all in all a fine cream at this price, smell a little less overbearing than the original. Ill certainly invest in another tube or two and see how it goes.
