Specific FUTUR question

This morning I had my first shave with my (B&B BST forum purchased) Merkur Futur. I lathered up with Martin de Candre soap (also my first time using that) and I found HEAVEN! I probably still will however the NEED to keep trying razors, soaps and creams is no longer a NEED! I have found the best of booths worlds!!!
Now my question is: one side of the Futur gave my an incredible shave, but the other side seemed to have a different gap (not visually, only by feel) and wasn't as close of a shave as the other side.
Has anyone else experienced that?

Interesting observation, but not one I myself have experienced. I've felt inconsistencies between two different blades, Astra SP, in my Futur, but I attributed it to quality control of the blades, not the razor. I look forward to hearing more thoughts on this.

I haven't experienced that either, but I have heard that this can happen with the Futur (and really any other razor). There will always be some clearance or "play" between the razor and the blade. When you put a blade in the razor the center hole in the blade is slightly bigger than the mating protrusion in the razor. This means you can usually move the blade back and forth, making the exposure different on each side of the razor. If this happens to you, just pop off the top of the Futur and try to re-seat your razor so that both sides are even.

Great idea!
thanks!!

I agree with tbress. I have been using a Futur as my go to razor since 2000. I have never had any problems at all.
You might also try to clean the blade deck area next time you change blades. Just make sure the blade seats evenly.
I like to use straights and Feather AC's when I have time for a leisurely shave, but if I need a quick, clean, smooth shave I'll be using my Futur with a Feather blade.
Best of luck,
Mike

Don't know if you are inserting your blade this way or not

I put the cap on a towel and drop the blade over the pins making sure it is centered.

I then gently press the razor handle into the cap (while the cap is resting on the towel) until it clicks in

I've never gotten a misalignment when loading blades this way

Great tip turtle!

I've never loaded mine that way, but I have had to re-align the blade once or twice, so I'm going to try your method the next few shaves. Thanks!

I've never had that issue with my Futur(s), but I did have a Stahley Live Blade that was definitely different from one side to the other.

Take a really good look at the head from the end and see if you see any difference from one side to the other.

+1.One thing I can add,be careful, dry hands only.If you have to make a adjustment during a shave use a towel to protect yer hands.

I have not had any issues with blade alignment in the 2 weeks I've had mine.

No issues replacing blades while holding it in my hand either. Love the end caps:thumbup:

Typically it is a spring pressure related issue......If I wasnt leaving for overseas next week, I would have you ship it to me for repair. Ive fixed several.

Can you tell me a little more about this and/or the repair?

I read about there being a gap difference in another thread also. I like everything else I have seen about this razor, but I am skeptical about the way the top is removed and replaced when changing the blade. Do any of you think this design will stand the test of time?

Check to make sure it has been assembled correctly, if it was taken apart to clean before you received it the seller may have reassembled it wrong. Disassemble and turn the head 180 degrees and see if that makes the gap equal on both sides.

How to break down a futur.

Changing the blade is notan issue. Where most have a problem is adjusting the dial setting while shaving. Wet hands+slippery razor is not hard to imagine. But using your head one can do this fine. Cradle the razor in between your fingers and let it hang like a "T" then with your thumb pressed firmly on the head of the razor adjust as needed. Pat your hands dry as a added precasusion before doing this.

OP: I did notice an EVER so slight blade/head gap difference when viewing it from the top. Gap is wider at the top than the bottom. I adjusted my shaving accordingly. I bought it used so I had no recourse. It's still in my rotattion and the one that managed to kill my rad. A great razor.
