First shave with Phoenix & Beau's newly released soap Right Handed Giant. The scent is a tribute to Brut, and I enjoyed it very much. It still has that earthy backbone which seems a characteristic of most P&B soaps, but I think this works well with the fresh fougère notes typical of the original Faberge Brut. I also noted that the consistency of the soap seems a little firmer than my other P&B soaps. The artwork, true to form for Phonix and Beau, is terrific - who couldn't love a Brut-crazed Prometheus .
I dialed the Mergress back slightly to 2 for this shave. Three effortless passes - the lather was very slick and protective. The matching Righted Handed Giant post-shave balm was delightful - the scent strength is just how I like balms - subtle but gently persistent, and it absorbed nicely into my skin to leave it smooth but with no greasiness. Rounded things out with that most extreme of citrus fragrances - Acca Kappa Green Mandarin.
Brush: Dogwood/Maggard SHD 26mm
Razor: ATT S1 on MR11
Blade: Astra Superior Platinum
Lather: Catie's Bubbles - Massepain
Post Shave: Declaration Grooming - Darkfall - Aftershave
Fragrance: Declaration Grooming - Darkfall - Eau de Parfum
Got the Massepain in the other day, first time using it. It's exactly what I was looking for, similar to Cella but in a better soap. It's a little sweet off the puck, but once lathered it's not too sweet.
Little weird with Darkfall, but the almond scent isn't really long lived, went away as soon as I splashed the Darkfall. I think Darkfall is expert execution of the goal, i'm just still figuring out if this is something I want to smell like. Yesterday I was unsure, today I am leaning towards keep.
Today I went with the Grand Shave King SLOC. This gave me a nice mild shave though not as close as the razors from last week.
Bowl/Scuttle - GP12
Soap - Le Pere Lucien Savon du Barbier (France)
Brush - Brad Sears
Blade - Gillette Platinum (6)
Razor - Grand Shave King
Post Shave - OSMA Pierre alum, Floid SE Mentolado Vigoroso A/S
Shave rating 4 of 5
This Grand Shave King is a mild razor and not very efficient. I received a good shave in 2 passes. The first pass WTG was smooth with almost no blade feel, and not very efficient and it left me with some stragglers, <DFS. The second pass, XTG and again was a very smooth pass with a little blade feel and and finished DFS. The Le Pere lather generated quickly and was excellent on both passes. I got a 2 pass, nick and weeper free shave. The alum was silent, even on my neck area which is unusual. I finished off with the Floid A/S.
Overall, a really good shave. Going with some US made OC razors this week.
