SOTD SUNDAY MORNING, JANUARY 24, 2021

Yesterday morning’s mug shave with the new-to-me H. Hobson Sheffield wedge was a delight. For this morning’s shave I selected my Thistle Cut 5/8, a visually unassuming vintage razor, and one of two I own at the recommendation of a Master Honer who feels the brand and the steel used in the blade represents one of the best values in vintage razors today. At his recommendation and the loan of my son’s Shapton progression I took the blade all the way to 30k. I then stropped it on 0.25 and 0.1 pasted linen and finished it on Horween leather. While yesterday’s mug shave was great, this little Thistle is in a whisker-meltin’ class by itself. Velveteen smooth after only two passes (WTG, ATG).

My dome shave yesterday featured Fine’s “World’s Finest SS Safety Razor”, an assertion I would take issue with. It represented an homage to the vintage Gillette New LC. Frankly, as I said yesterday, I prefer the original Gillette. My dome shaving selection for today was my favorite AC safety razor. I also own a Vector which is without doubt also an excellent razor, but can be a pain in the petoot with random blade sticking issues. The Colonial General V2 has a narrow head profile, not as exaggerated as the Vector’s, is a bit heavier, but more importantly, doesn’t suffer from the Vector’s random blade sticking issue. I usually use the Feather Super, but ran out, so I loaded a Feather Proguard, a blade I enjoy in my Feather DX. It delivered an excellent shave and left me feeling refreshed, clean, and dolphin smooth.

RAZOR: Thistle Cut Co. 5/8 (Mug), Colonial General V2 (Dome)
BLADE: Feather Proguard AC
PREP: Cold water rinse followed by a scrub with Argan Oil
BRUSH: JR Boar #374
SOAP: Mitchell’s Wool Fat
POSTSHAVE: Cold water wash with brush squeezings followed by Humphreys Lilac WH. Finished with A&E Post-Shave Serum.

I've had some beautiful shaves this month, with a lot of products to review and test out. The highlights of the month were definitely testing out the Yaqi Sagrada familia, and getting my first adjustable, a 1965 slim adjustable.

After one use I can already say that the slim is my new favourite razor, there's something absolutely beautiful about being able to change the feel of the shave at the twist of a knob.

This month's first shaves were with the bundubeard "mystery soap", and it's an absolutely fantastic soap. The full review on that will be coming out in the next week or so, but it's definitely a keeper.

It was also fantastic to be able to test out Yaqi South Africa's new glacial slickness cream (the prototype, the final product differs to the best of my knowledge).

Razor - Merkur Progress Adjustable
Blade - Astra Greens
Soap - Mango Sage Tea by Maggards
Post - Tea Tree Witch Hazel
Serum - Hyaluronic Acid
Balm - Prorasso Green Tea and Oat
EDT - Eau Sauvage by Dior

Comments: Very good shave, following my last video of dialling in the shave with the progress razor, I dialled up a step. Trialling Hyaluronic Acid.
Great idea to actually put up a YT video! 😀

My impression was that you're putting WAY TOO MUCH pressure on your WTG pass and throughout the entire shave. It feels painful to watch. Honestly. I say this with very best intentions. I'd go slower and gentler, perhaps try to hold the razor with just 2 fingers. The idea is gradual stubble reduction.

As for post-shave treat, I think more often than not "LESS is MORE" holds true. Applying 3 distinct products all at once each and every day will do you no good in the long run. It's a chemical overkill. Good quality A/S will have ALL you need in a single product - protection/disinfection, moisturizing properties, soothing/calming effect and GREAT scent.

On a side note: big thumbs-up for Eau Sauvage, one of the all-time classics, love it! 👍👍

A top class shave.

Back to my first (and probably favorite) TFS shaving soap and aftershave today. Simple and excellent (IMO of course).

I have a feeling that the Timeless will be on that podium by the end of my next shave. :yesnod:

Happy shaves guys. :cornut:
