This is the second shave with the Karve Razor and PolSilver Super Iridium blade. The shave was close and smooth – BBS – without any touchups. The next brush in my rotation is the B&B 2023 Contributor’s Brush by Paladin. This bush excels at making lather. Today the brush was a bit wetter than usual, and the result was a much better lather. The Monsavon soap is on its 15th use. A nice BBS shave. Have a wonderful day and week, folks.

A Legacy Etched in Steel
Master Gunnery Sargeant James A. Stikeleather
Shave of the Night

11/10/2024

The black backdrop deepens the shadows, lending a somber tone to the scene. The American flag waves proudly, its vibrant colors a stark contrast to the darkness, a symbol of enduring freedom. Superimposed upon it, the Marine Corps emblem, rendered in silver and gold, gleams with a quiet strength, a testament to honor, courage, and commitment.

"Happy Birthday, Marines!" the inscription proclaims, a celebratory note amidst the solemnity. Below, "Semper Fidelis" – Always Faithful – echoes the unwavering dedication that binds every Marine.

But it is the ghostly image of my father, a Master Gunnery Sergeant and one of the Corps' last enlisted aviators, that commands attention. His presence, though ethereal, fills the frame, a reminder of his service, his sacrifice, and the legacy he left behind.

In front of his image stand the tools of remembrance and respect. A Marine Corps shaving mug stands proudly, bearing the emblem he wore with pride. Beside it, a USMC special edition brush from Alpha Shaving Works, its handle a tribute to the Corps' colors, awaits its duty. And then, the "Dress Bleu’s" shaving soap, aftershave, and balm from VanYulay, their poignant image of a Marine presenting a folded flag, speak volumes about the sacrifices made and the enduring memory of those who gave their all.

But there, standing at attention like a sentinel, is the Woolfbaldes Devil's Tail Razor, a homage to the Marines' fierce nickname, "Devil Dogs." Handcrafted in South Africa, its elegant form embodies the spirit of the Corps – tradition, timeless quality, and an unwavering commitment to excellence.

As I prepare for this commemorative shave, the weight of history and emotion hangs heavy in the air. I am the sole surviving son, exempt from combat and therefore unable to really be a Marine, carrying the torch of my father's legacy in other ways. Mixed emotions—pride, sorrow, perhaps a touch of what might have been—swirl within me.

The lather whipped into a rich froth, carries the scent of "Dress Bleu’s," a fragrance that speaks of duty, honor, and remembrance. Each stroke of the Devil's Tail Razor, a tribute to my father's dedication, brings a sense of closeness, a connection across time and circumstance.

The smooth skin and the lingering scent of aftershave and balm are not just the marks of a well-groomed man but a ritual of remembrance, a way to honor the many Marines who shaped my life.

Today, on the Marine Corps Birthday, I celebrate their legacy and my father's. The flag waves, the emblem shines, and the memory of my father, the Master Gunnery Sergeant, the aviator, the Marine, lives on. Semper Fidelis.

Razor: Woolfblades 426 ("Devil's Tail") Custom-Made in an RWL 34 Damasteel razor. It has a full hollow grind 8/8 smiley edge. The scales are made in a fat carbon in Black and Red with carbon fiber inlays.
Brush: Alpha Shaving BetaHive USMC™ Red - Cerakote™ 28mm of two band Alpha G5 5th generation synthetic.
Mug: Grey Fox Pottery USMC
Soap:
VanYulay Dress Bleu's
