Songs that get stuck in your head and their antidotes...

I have found that the only cure for when a song gets stuck in my head is to find an even more obnoxiously poppy song to replace it. This leads to an arms race of sorts in my own mind, with devastating outcomes.
For example -

ruby soho
come on eileen
the reflex
hazy shade of winter
friday i'm in love
unbelievable
tubthumping
milkshake
the song that never ends

And now the song that never ends is stuck in my frickin' head.
fix it pls. nao.

Sometimes there's just no cure. I've been haunted by Nik Kershaw's 80s hit, "Wouldn't It Be Good?" for about the last week or so. I heard it when I was at the gym, and it got stuck in my head. As far as I can remember, the song doesn't have any particular associations for me--just one of many songs that I remember hearing in clubs in the 80s. I don't own it now and never owned it before. Still, I wake up and it's playing. I catch my self whistling the intro or the solo. It just won't go away.

I tried actually listening to it on YouTube to see if that might purge it. No luck. I keep other music playing and that's fine--until it stops and Nik's back. I even tried surgical extraction--listing to a song like the Psychedelic Furs' "Heartbreak Beat" because I thought that the tone of the sax on that track might overwhelm it. Again, no joy.

I guess that I'm going to just have to put on my chroma key suit and let the song run its course. "I got it bad, you don't know how bad I got it..."

Apparently the cure is to listen to very complex music it occupies your brain trying to hear and understand evertying that's going on.

I don't even dare type the names of some of the most egregious mindworms, for fear that I'll get infested again.

However, I have found a simple cure that usually works. "How much is that doggy in the window" sung aloud, is usually enough.

Anytime a bad song gets in my head, I grab either a Metallica or Beastie Boys cd and play a few songs. This usually helps.

There was a guy at work who would be infected by earbugs so easily, I would whistle a few bars of "If I only had a brain" from the Wizard of Oz. By lunch you could hear him sing out loud " If I only had a brain " . It was an easy way to make the day go by faster.

Everytime I see the "Speakeasy" forum, the song "Speakeasy" by 311 gets stuck in my head. The cure is to read some threads in the "Speakeasy."
