What's new

Sometimes you just have to give up - Timor again!

Why is it that a razor made around 100 years ago can be just shown a hone and get a sharp edge yet tonight I've spent another 30 minutes on a Timor (after an initial 30 minutes last week) and I've just had to give up?

These razors just aren't consistent - some take an edge and some like this example are a dead-loss.

I've honed about 10 razors this week, vintage and modern and they've all behaved, but this one is trying my patience.

My Timor was a &$*# to hone. I could not get the bevel set to save my life. Then, when I finally got it hone up, the thing shaved horribly...I don't get it either...The G+F blades look really nice, but the quality of the steel just isn't there...

My experience with Timor have also been negative. Steer clear. They are a problem razor.

I've just been restoring a vintage 7 Day Solingen-made Set over the last few months and I 'batch honed' all seven razors in around 45 minutes tops and the shave from each was without question - excellent.

What's happened to German Steel?

My personal view is that G&F steel is no longer made in Germany.

To be honest, I doubt the steel used by any of the German manufacturers is made in Germany. I don't think that is an issue. The Chinese, for example, know how to make steel. Where problems can occur is in the heat treating. That is done by the razor manufacturer, and that is where a razor can go very wrong.

I honed two of the Timor's for a buddy. They were both a pain in the ***! They eventually took a nice edge but it took a long time. They were so frustrating that I only worked on them a little at a time then put them away. I hope to never see one again!
