Ok, folks. I'm looking for a new Double Edge thats similar to the HD... but better! I have an EJDE89L and wonder what else could compare. I want something no more aggressive and maybe slightly smoother. Thanks!

The 38c is the razor I just ordered for my first DE razor.
The barber I go to had one and he let me hold and play with it. I love the extra weight and longer handle it has.
The head is identical to the 34C and it has a beautiful barber pole designed handle.

try a vintage gillette rocket. Since you are in the UK should pick one up quite easily, My favourite so far is the flairtip rocket. Better built than the normal superspeed and also a bit heavier
a rocket is a great suggestion. i might throw an aristocrat into the mix as well. fantastic thick grippy handle. smoooth shave that's neither mild nor aggressive.

Some good suggestions. How does my DE89L compare to an HD?
slightly less aggressive and a bit smoother.
It is head-heavy and lighter than an HD.
The HD weight distribution is more even and it is weightier (HD)
We're talking about the Merkur HD here, right?

Rocket HD would go well with the merkur HD. 
Not just for the namesake either. The rocket is a damn fine razor, super smooth, and my favourite gillette (it makes the adjustables seem... not smooth). You could pick one up for very little money, so even if the experiment failed you wouldn't be put out.

I never use any vintage razors. But I do use the Merkur HD and Muhle R89(same head as EJ) as my two main razors. I am in the minority here I think but I prefer the HD. The slimmer head gives me greater blade feel and angle. It is my favorite razor. For me there is no current razor that beats it. But as I said I can't speak for vintage.
I too prefer the HD. The shave at least. The fit and finish of the EJ is fantastic, I could just never get as good a shave out of it. It is too mild and I cant get the closeness I can with the HD without more pressure or more passes, both of which lead to irritation.
Aristocrat Jr. Definitely smoother, and a better shaver also.
