He's not shaving. Look at the angle. He is scraping. Actually, since he is not howling with pain he is probably just posing and being careful not to move the razor.
For now I suggest avoiding Chinese and Pakistani strops with one exception: ebay seller "thexbay" sells a 2-1/2" wide model that sorta works okay, for $8.88. Useful as a beginner strop.

Im going to add that nobody would hold a razor like that inless they are skinning a deer or a steer.
