Some Ink Questions

Hey everyone, Well it's time to buy some ink for the first time and I'm not sure what to go with. I really like Noodler's Baystate Blue, but I'm weary about all the talk about how hard it stains (or easy as it were) I'm in college right now so I write on a lot of different paper, and I don't want my hands to be covered in stains I can't get off because of touching ink that hasn't dried.

I guess my question is, how fast does Baystate dry and should I really worry about it staining things?

I had to give up on BSB, unfortunately. It was a go-to ink for a while, but it just has the mysterious ability to get all over everything and it's very hard to get out.

My most beloved color is plain old Noodler's Blue. Behaves well in every pen I've tried it in. Nice, vibrant, medium blue with decent shading on good paper. Very attractive ink for daily use.

there are several threads talking similar issues.. basically u r trying to choose a dry ink for ur paper.. it depends a lot on ur paper and ur writing speed..
Parker Quink is a cheap dry ink and may suit u. Noodlers i think is a wet than quink.. u can try both and decide.

BSB will stain everything it touches, and may bleed through on cheap paper, so it may not be a good choice. I have not found its drying time to be unduly long. There are lots of good blue inks. Check out the ink selection tool at Goulet Pens for a comparison. Good luck.

BSB was my favorite blue, until I got Pelikan Royal Blue. A nic blue that dries fast and is made buy a company that has been making fountain pens for quite some time.

Its a lovely blue, and with that being said, I have two dedicated pens. It will stain what it comes in contact with.

For quick work taking notes in meetings and such I use Quink. I love all my noodlers colors for around the home and office, but Quink writes well in all my pens and dries fast.

That's a tough one.

An ink that would write well and dry quickly on good, "fountain-pen-friendly" paper would likely feather a lot on cheaper paper, and the ink that would write well on cheap paper and not feather a lot would take forever to dry on the good paper.

Can you carry two pens? One for good paper and one for bad?

Thanks for all the replies guys, I don't think I'm going with the BSB anymore. I'm thinking about the Parker now. Not sure if I want the blue because it's washable, but the blue-black isn't bad.

Thanks guy! This is my first buy of ink after working my way through a bottle of vintage Script

Simple. Get a sample of Noodlers Bernanke Blue from Goulets. It's claim to fame is fast drying. I use it daily at work and love it. It's not quite as neon as BSB but is a nice deep royal blue without hint of green or magenta.

Another option is Pelikan Royal Blue which is considered a dry ink. It can tame the wettest pens. I'm not as fond of the color though.

You can get samples of both at Goulets.

They've been making ink since 1832 ... plus, I think they deliver!

College = business, in business or college it should not be about the medium (ink) but the message. That means blue, black or blue-black. Nothing that draws attention to itself, just using a FP will do that. Go with something from one of the major pen companies. Personally I like Waterman Blue Black a lot.

I must be slipping.

Noodler's Kung Te-cheng would be a great ink for you. It dries quickly, and it behaves well, on both good and poor paper. It's also a nice combination of restrained and individualistic, so you can fly under the radar and still be your own man.

It's not a vibrant blue like BSB, but a much more restrained and dusky purple sort of thing.
