What's new

Soaps you hated and now adore

Here's a little story I'd like to share. Something completely unexpected happened to me this weekend. While shopping for groceries in a Turkish supermarket close to where I live, I stumbled upon a stick of Arko shaving soap. Knowing that I had used it in the past and completely hated the stuff because of the scent, I did not want to buy it at first, but, because it was so cheap, I could not resist buying it.

This mornig I decided to lather it up. I was not expecting too much of it but when I started to lather up I fell in love with that clean, crisp, citrus scent. I really don't know why. All of the sudden I no longer associated it with cheap detergent products. In fact, it reminded me of the clean opening notes of Tabac EDT (one of my favourite colognes). Even the scent of T&H Luxury shaving soap came to mind. I'm already looking forward to using it tomorrow :w00t:

I love to read your experiences with soaps you revisited and somehow fell in love with after you could not stand them at first.

I haven't changed my opinion of a product I hated, but I have been pleasantly surprised by products I thought I'd hate.

While I still don't love the smell of Tabac, I now enjoy using it. I couldn't stand the smell when I first got it but after about a week of steady use I grew to tolerate/enjoy it.

De Vergulde Hand is a soap which I once hated now can stand. It's out of my rotation but I'm looking forward to using it.

Believe it or not, I did not like Tabac shaving soap at first. After its first two or three uses, I put it away in my cabinet, where it sat for several weeks. I decided to give it another go, just to see what all the fuss was about. First "new" use, I fell in love. I couldn't figure out why I didn't get a good shave with it at first, but I'm really glad I went back to it. It is now one of my top three favorite soaps (other two are English Fern and DRH Arlington).

When I first got D. R. Harris Arlington soap, I detested the scent. Now, it is one of my favorites. For me, it took some getting used to, and I got used to it.

I always recognized its excellent shaving properties.

The odd thing is I'm one of the few people who fell in love with Arko at first sight/smell.

My first whiff of C&E Nomad was a turn off, but after a few trial shaves it started to grow on me. Now it is one of my favorite scents! Interesting how my opinion of it changed. In terms of lather it is okay, not stellar but not horrible. By way of comparison, my view of Tabac's scent was meh! And now it is still meh! But in terms of lather it is great (the best or nearly the best!).

I used to dislike all scented grooming products. Then...I discovered wet shaving...and Mama Bears...and SCS...and Trumpers...Truefitt and Hill...and lately, even Penhaligon's. So, I've pretty much come around on everything, but Blenheim Bouquet is the biggest one I never would have thought I'd come around to a year ago, because I tend to prefer scents that are pretty straightforward (Spicy Lime, Coconut, Sandalwood, Bay Rum).

While Arko is not my number one soap it's the only soap that knocked my socks off with its first use. Love the smell, the performance, and the price.

not a soap, but when I first bought a tube of Musgo, I thought it smelled REAL bad! It took me a while to get used to it. I like it now!

c&e nomad. Smelled like a dead dog in the box in store...bought it because the cashier showed and a lady friend both had an o face when they smelled it....didn't appreciate it till i put it to the cheesegrater and milled it into an ol container. Fantastic smell, great lather for a glycerin soap

Same here on the Mussgo. When I first smelled it, I was disappointed and didn't even use it for awhile. Now it is one of my favorites and I use the AS as well as bath soap.
