soap storage question ?

Ok I did read the Wiki on how to store soap but it's missing what I'm looking to find out which is more of a question of placement. What I mean by this is lets say you get a puck of brand "x" soap and it comes in paper or whatever so after this I know you can store it in a bowl or mug etc. I do not want to do that ..... I see some photo's people are using either generic tins so to speak or glass with screw tops etc.... where do you find those ? I have looked on Amazon, Ebay, the drug store etc and can't find anything that would fit the bill or soap. while we are on the topic of storage Iread in the Wiki abut soap going rancid. How long would this take ? I just spent a small fortune in soap to try out some higher end soaps and they will combined last me at east a year or maybe two ( I better shave twice a day). Should I store it in the fridge ? I know this sounds a bit over board but what is the best way to protect my investment and to store it nicely. thanks !!!

This week I put in four shaves with a soap that is probably 100 years old. Rancid? Not that I noticed.

Any 1-cup container is pretty good for most pucks. You might pick up a pack of Ziploc XS, for example.

That's encouraging to hear !!! 100 years old how'd did you aquire this ? or is that just slang for very old ? the zip lock XS idea is a pretty good idea but I was looking for more like the stainless steel tins or the glass with chrome top route. I want it to look somewhat classy or my wife will be a P.I.T.A over it. the only thing I was able to find on Amazon were wooden bowls which I really liked but they got kind of a 50/50 review on the customer reviews about cracking and or odor from the stains used.

+1 on ziplock containers and the like. I use Pack-a-Snack plastic containers (in Florida purchased at Container Store for $1.99, on the west coast at Rite Aid for 99 cents).

Local stores, online vendors, something already around the house. Many threads indicate where the person found the container or the manufacturer of the container. Do you have anything in mind that you're after? People can better answer if you're looking for something specific.

To the OP, I don't know what soaps you are talking about storing, but as to your concern with whether it will turn rancid, if they are tallow-based remember that its saponified. And, generally speaking, it is the amount of water that remains in the soap that determines its longevity, i.e. a triple-milled hard soap will last much longer than a soft soap or croap. But even still a croap will last at least a year or two.

As for storage, I have a puck of the vintage Penhaligon's English Fern, with tallow (from the 80's), in a mug, uncovered. Its perfectly fine.

Yes those are what I am looking for and now I have a ethical dilemma to over come the Ikea ones fit my needs perfectly and no one can say 3 for 4.99 is not an awesome deal. WCS has a similar product that is similar but not as nice as the IKEA ones for 4.00 each and they are not as nice...... my ethical concern is supporting WCS I feel like I should keep the money in the industry and feel guilty not doing so but, at the same time they are not as nice and are more expensive than Ikea's GRUNDTAL model. On a positive side I have options now and places to consider and I appreciate greatly the feedback you guys and girls are always so helpful to us newbs. One last question does the IKEA version fit lets say larger pucks as in DR Harris Arlington or a MWF ? also I would possibly need to flatten out a smaller puck like Col Conk I would assume ? thanks again !!

If you're talking about DR Harris and MWF, the answer is obvious:

For what it's worth, you can always grate your soaps and press them into any container you like. Doing so has the twin benefits of eliminating any size concerns you might have and easing the lathering process.

+1.

If you travel a bit and want to take some with you this is the best approach as well! You can make your favourite soap travel size :)

I ended up buying the storage tins from WCS..... honestly I liked the IKEA ones better but call me weird I want to support John at WCS and keep the money within the shaving specific community.... I ended up getting the orange B&B brush as well and 2 more razor and brush stand combos.

Good man... I need to put together another WSC order myself. More tins and more twist up shave stick containers are on the list already

Yeah I have to break the habit of using Amazon..... granted the prices are great but am I really helping the B&M shops probably not at all so I' hoping to make WCS a staple when I need to make purchases.
