Do you find that a certain soap or cream works great with a DE but lousy with a straight? Or vice versa? Or is it all technique? Should the same soap or cream work just as well with either tool?

I'm very young in the SR world but I've used both creams and soaps and the only thing I've discovered is that both need way more water than I was used to using.
Thinner and wetter, otherwise, doesn't matter.
