There is a difference between small and congested. If you have a small space it's important to upkeep it and maintain some order in it, or else it will look like one of those horrible Hong Kong apartments from the link above. Japanese, for example, are known for their affection for small spaces, but in most cases their homes look fine and tasteful. It's important to distinguish between the more important things in your space and less important things that you don't really need lying around. I have a small room too, but everyone that walks in notes the order and the minimalistic design. I would love to have a bigger room, but you can do just fine with a smaller one if you just know how to use the space intelligibly and with taste. If you will be messy and keep throwing things around randomly it will bound to look like a pig sty. A good lesson in keeping your small personal space in order can be had in the army, for example. Another environment that can teach you how to make things right is working on a ship.

Wow.. I feel claustrophobic by just looking at the pics. That is small.
Hong Kong is a cramped place. Some more high rise apartment pictures here.
And if you have never seen the old Kowloon Walled City, you may find this photo writeup interesting. It was believed to be the most densely populated place ever.
If I had to make due with a small space I could make it happen. Where would I shave though? :/
I was wondering if the bathrooms are communal in such a complex.
You hold it until you get to work at 6 AM. You go one last time before you leave the office at 11PM.
