So who's going to to the Beaujolais Nouveau thing this year?

Okay, "did" the B.N. thing this year ... officially they were out last thursday.

Are you liking a simple & fruity alternative to overly-taking-itself-too-seriously wines, or do you get turned off by the overt crass marketing ploy?

If you partook, what did you think of it, and what did you serve it with? Any great party stories?

I tried a couple of this year's versions this weekend with a simple meat and cheese plate. My wife and I always enjoy BN, but found ourselves vastly preferring last year's harvest to this year's -- so much so that I'd recommend pretty much any 2009 Cru Beaujolais over the 2010 Nouveau. No great party story, just my wife and I, but not a bad reward for all of the weekend's leaf raking!

The hype every year is simply ridiculous here in Japan (with prices to match). I find most examples to be thin and lacking in....well anything really...and overpriced to boot. I'll save my yen for something else. :thumbdown

I do get a few bottles of the traditional Beaujolais Noveau (Duboeuf) every year as a light, slightly fruity, quaffing wine.

For dinner itself, I find a nice Pinot Noir goes well with turkey, and is a little more formal. I learned this from Julia Child. Seems to work better than most whites, but we still have some white on hand for those that prefer.

After taking a couple of years off I bought a bottle of Duboeuf and we drank it last night with some left over lasagna. Not bad really, similar to what I have had in the past. I did make sure to let it breath for awhile though.

I remember a few years ago it was undrinkable. Took it back and got my money back that year.

It's a great, if somewhat overblown, tradition. BN has introduced many folks to wine- no harm in that.

It's almost always a thin, almost fizzy wine- the Boylan's black cherry soda of wine, if you will. Goes down real easylike.

Even regular Beaujolais gets shunned by the cognoscenti, but some of the Cru Beaulolais can be delightful. A good Morgon, Fleurie, or Moulin-à-Vent can make you rethink gamay.
