What's new

So what did I do wrong?

Honed a straight. Started on my DMT1000, got the bevel set. Went to my coti to polish it up, then to my pasted strop, then my canvas strop, then my TM strop. It was popping hairs...& that's no small feat as I have baby fine hair.
Shaved with it...nice shave. Stropped again on leather, then decided I wanted to further enhance it w/my JNAT.
After going through the nagura progression, I again stropped on canvas, then leather. Yanked out a hair (no small feat considering how much I got left) & it wouldn't even catch this time.
Any idea as to what happened (besides making it fail a HHT)?
Thanks.

could be any number of things.
First - there's the HHT, I don't subscribe to it being a 'test'.
But - whatever....

After that -
Slurry too thick or too dry.
Retarding the edge and not bringing it up all the way back.
Awase not flat?
Gremlins?

After you have a good edge from the Coti - you don't need to do a progression on the Jnat.
What you needed to do, perhaps, are some laps on light slurry and then maybe water-only.

Hi, Chances are you have over honed and have a wire edge. If you have a magnifying glass look very closely at the edge if you see a line it's got a wire edge. You can fix it by honing it a few strokes on each side with your coti and then stropping it on your leather strop.
Once it will pop hairs it's essentially as sharp as it needs to be.

Why jnat after coti? Two words: extra sharpness.

I love how smooth coti edges are but I really find them lacking the sharpness required on the dense and thick hair growth on my jawline and under my chin.

Some stones (not all and not necessarily yours) will do SOMETHING to an edge that deadens it slightly if used with too little (take note of that... too little) pressure. DMT 8k comes immediately to mind. A number of slates, at least one Jnat I've owned and quite a few vintage synths I've used as well. Some of these are fixed with stropping (DMT 8k always is) and some (most slates) are not. The one common theme is that they are ALWAYS fixed right back up with a few passes (1-5) with slight pressure. I can have a beautiful dmt 1.2k bevel, come off my dmt 8k and not cut arm hair, do two more passes on the 8k with a bit of pressure and bam, perfect 8k edge cutting arm hair like a beauty. Honestly, if I really thought through what the problem was, I could likely figure out what's going on, but I've never given it too much thought since it's such an easy fix. This wire edge people always talk about could be the explanation in fact, though I do not see any evidence of this under the scope (no line before fixing, no flakes of thin metal hanging around after).
This could be the problem.

What kind of pressure are you using on the JNAT? Experiment with it and also make sure your slurry isn't too thick. I recommend just going to the tomo slurry, diluting it, then rinse the stone but not the blade and doing some more laps. Light pressure has been working well for me. Barely more than the weight of the blade. Any time I used more then that I began to dull the edge a little.

EDIT: The "little pressure" was kind of working. Medium pressure worked best for me. Play around with it.
