What's new

So I've read the wikki and some journals.

I still want to try straight razors but I'm afraid of what can happen. Ever since I saw Straight Razor shaving in the movies I've always wanted to have one done and wanted to learn how to do it myself. I'm honestly scared ****less of cutting my throat while shaving since it is just a blade. It looks so amazing! As a friend once told me "if you shave with a Straight Razor its basically the Awesomest thing you can do in your life". Can anyone help me to calm my fears and actually try it?

Sure. What do you need? We've all been timid at first. No reported deaths yet. Many of us do it a lot! No worries.

Do you have a razor? First thing is to get a shave ready razor. If you come up with a razor I will sharpen it for you.

Next you need a strop. I would get a fairly decent one but no need to spend a ton.

We all started out with great trepidation and a but of excitement! That's all part of it.
look at it like this: how often do you cut your fingers off with a kitchen knife when your prepping meat or veg? Sure accidents happen but in all honesty the worst you'll get is a little nick or small blood spot!
and much of that will happen in the first month or so.
its surprising how quick your confidence will grow with practice and care.....just take it slow and steady and listen to the advice your given: it might not always be the same from every person; but I've never read a bad bit of advice on here!

get yourself a razor: get it professionally shave ready from one of the guys here:Ricks offer is worth taking up!!
start by shaving your sideburns down to your chin...that's the easiest, if your confident then carry on....if your shaky then finish the rest with your normal razor til your confidence grows....it's not a race and nobody will tell you it is!
its a journey, an adventure and a pleasure when it starts to work properly!
And it WILL be the best shave of your life!

Right now I have nothing. I haven't made the plunge into getting a Straight Razor. I've just stuck with DE shaving so far. Which I have been doing successful for about a month. Its just something I wish to learn about

I've got a few shops in town that have some super nice German made Straights for Sale. I wanna take a look at the guide to check for a good one again then maybe pick one of those up

Nope. It's all you. Welcome to the forum. Now lather up and shave. It's the only way you'll know if it's for you.

Well my main questions are what brands should I go for? Also is it safer to buy a New Razor then play with the old ones once I get the feel for it?

Stay away from blades made in Pakistan. Most anything sold by someone that sells cheap knives and fantasy knives...stay away from.

Old. New. Sharp metal don't care how old it is. Get whichever. Most have both.

I think the danger of cutting your throat is way overrated. Why is cutting the throat so dangerous? Because the jugular vein and carotid artery run through that area. Look at your wrist and the back of your hand, and take note of the veins you see. Now go look in your bathroom mirror, and pick out the jugular and carotid. Could you find them? I bet not. They're buried too deep. A straight is certainly capable of cutting that deep if applied the right (wrong) way, but in your own hand, moving at the proper pace, if the razor bites you, you'll feel it long before you hit anything dangerous.

As to what razors to look at and such, I will defer to the more experienced gentlemen here. They'll point you in the right direction.
