What's new

So I Used my Gillette Fusion Today.....

And i got a pretty good shave. Surprising I know. I've been DE shaving for about 2 months and this morning I had to rush out the door. I think that DE shaving has really taught me to use no pressure. My face felt almost BBS. The only thing I didn't like was the drag I felt while I was shaving. But overall it wasn't too bad. It really got my chin area well, which has always been hard for my with my DE.

So how would to compare the two directly? Do you feel one is superior to the other? Or is it merely skill of the user and the techniques employed?

Many have experienced the same thing. It's all about learning proper technique and using quality products. Once I even went almost 2 weeks with my Quattro:eek: before I went back to my DE. The first couple of shaves after going back were excellent, then it was downhill from there.

I've tried a Fusion before and had much the same experience I had with the Machxx series. The drag comes from the automatic pivot of the blade which forces the most agressive angle possible for the head. If I have to use a cartridge, I will use the Sensor because the pivot point is different; pivots from the middle instead of the rear of the cartridge. In either case, I don't believe either the technique of the user or the skills have much to do with how effective the cartridge is. The cartridges demand a certain amount of pressure to even get the blades to function, so there is practically no adjustments a user can make. For me, that results in razor burn and ingrowns because I can't control the angle of the blades. It does take a little manipulation of the cartridge to get to some places on the face, but that's about it. All that said, if the user gets good shaves then by all means use what works.

I know it's heresy but I had much the same experience. After several months of DE shaving I gave my retired M3 a try. Unlike the "before DE" days, this time I used the same care and prep I now use with my DE, pre-shave, properly prepared lather properly applied, three low pressure passes, lather in between each, and post shave care.

The result, a comfortable, bbs smooth, shave. Perhaps the real difference between "contemporary" shaving is not the razor but the prep and products used in advance and after the razor. Before becoming DE convert I use a quality canned foam, but no pre-shave product. At most have I might re-lather once and over shaved bare skin to get a close shave.

I'd not going back to the M3 regularly. The experience however makes it possible to use the M3 when my travel arrangements don't give me access to a decent DE blade for my razor without feeling all that deprived.

My experience has been quite different. I always got great shaves w/ the
$disposables, but went to DE for the low cost. Since adjusting to the DE, I've tried bringing out the disposable when in a rush (I shave my head also) and I got really lousy shaves.

Why I can't get BBS like I use to w/ disposables I can't figure out. I guess my face adjusts to one thing and thats all it wants.

A rushed shave with a disposable compared to a careful DE shave would be lousy experience

I too tried the Fusion when I got a free sample with 2 blades.

I got a good shave the 3 times I used it. But I totally agree about the 'drag' - I guess the more blades they introduce, the more friction there will always be.

A bowl, a brush and some Trumpers coconut, and you could get a good shave with a butter knife.

pretty much, kinda.
I can get a good BBS shave with DE, straight or multiblade
its what YOU want

I find I can get more ingrowns with the multi blade and for this reason it is hardly used

I'm in the same boat too, I started using a Schick Quattro and I getting far better shaves than my Progress. I've actually never got any ingrowns with the multi's but I every once in a while get them whilst using a DE.

I went back and forth for months before I was comfortable enough with the DE to use it full time. I used the trac ii and then the M3 for 35 + years with no ill effects -- I was getting perfectly good shaves. I changed for the sport and tradition of DE shaving -- it had nothing to do with cost, health or the ecology. I've never had an ingrown hair, I've never given a second thought to the biodegradability/recycling issue (I should, but I haven't), and while the cartridges were expensive, I also didn't have $500 worth of brushes and other shaving supplies to worry about, so money is certainly not the issue. I shave DE because it's just plain fun. The bonus is that, now that I am paying more attention to my morning shaves, I am getting the best shaves I have ever had.

There is no right or wrong. Just do what makes you happy and Enjoy!

It shouldn't BE "heresy" to state that one can get a good shave from a Fusion. It's a good razor. With proper prep and a water-based lather, it delivers BBS shaves.

I use my Fusion every time I shave for the 3rd and final pass. BBS or near BBS every time. Going ATG with a pivot head using very light pressure is the best way to get a BBS shave IMO.

The problem with the Fusion isn't that it's inferior to a DE razor, it's that the cartridges wear out as fast as DE blades ( despite what the commercials say...then they cost $9 to replace for a 4-pack) and Gillette's marketing is such that they tell you to use foam/gel to shave with (which is inherently inferior to a water-based lather in my opinion). This, combined with bad prep, is why people get such bad shaves from them.

i found the quality of my fusion shaves went out the window using a thick lather like i get from tabac to be honest. i have to water it down a lot or just use canned goo to get a close shave with a fusion now, takes at least as many passes as with my DE just a little faster as it requires pretty much no attention. used a fusion 3 times on my face since i picked up my straight, two were for weddings out of town when all i had was a straight i did not want to deal with transporting and once just to see what i had been missing (not much actually).

there will always be a fusion in my bathroom for uses i would not put a DE or a straight to. (say like a 20 second just water shave on my way out the door for a class).

yeh, I had a quick shave with a fusion yesterday - I got it as a free sample off a thread on whirlpool and it's been sitting around for a couple of months. Yesterday I was in a real hurry in the morning so I thought I'd give it a go.

It worked.
It was easy.
It was quick.

It wasn't special.
