What's new

So I messed up a bit

Yesterday two packages that I have been waiting for showed up. My blade sampler came in from NT GUY and the Best Shaving Set came in from Store34. All of a sudden I had a lot more choices in what to lather with and what to load in my razor. I had just read a thread where everybody was going on about how nice the Derby blades were so I used one of them in my long tooth NEW. I had also been wanting to try face lathering so I picked the ARCO shave stick. That's right I am only about two months into wet shaving and I decided to change three things at once, blades, shave soap and lathering technique. Wait it gets worse, I also just had to use the horse hair brush included in my shave set. I know, I know that's four things.
I had a bad shave last night.
First off I gave the new brush a shampoo because it stunk like a horse, as it should I guess. Then I let it soak in hot water while I took my shower. When I got out of the shower I smeared the ARCO stick all over my beard and it stinks too. I feel like I've smelled that smell before but I can't seem to place it. I pulled the brush out of the sink and gave it a shake and proceeded to try and make some lather. I didn't do well at all but I didn't let that stop me. I picked up my razor with the new Derby blade in it and went for it. The lather sucked, it was way to thick and didn't even want to rinse off the razor. I had to use a tooth brush to clean it off. I had to go over each section twice just to scrape it off my face. No cushioning no protection at all. I already had about three nicks on my face.
OK I don't know how to face lather, why would I? I didn't read any face lathering tutorial or watch any vid clips about it. So I sliced off about 2mm of the shave stick and stuck it to the bottom of my bowl. Now I could build some nice lather. So I lather my face again and go for pass number two. It went OK considering how irritated my face was. Why didn't I stop there? Who knows I guess I'm stubborn. Pass three was kind of painful but I got through it.
The alum hurt really bad. I didn't try the bar that came in the kit but used what I already had. I wasn't about to go for change number five right then. I normally like the burn of my Clubman Bay Rum but it was a bit extreme last night. My face didn't just burn or hurt, it had some kind of painful tingle going on. Not a pleasant feeling at all.
I clean up the bathroom and go to bed then, thinking it will all be alright in the morning but I couldn't go to sleep. I just lay there feeling the pain-tingle and thinking about my multiple and compounding mistakes. Screw it I get back up and go for change number five. I must be mentally deficient. I had heard good stuff about the ARCO oily after shave cream so I smeared a bit of it on my face. I didn't want to use it as I have oily skin and was worried it would clog my pores but hey at this point can I really do anymore harm? That cream soothed my face pretty nicely and I went to sleep to dream of better days when my shaves go well.
I wake up this morning to a bit of minor face pain but far less than I deserve. I'll live to shave again but not for a few days.

lol... sounds like you know the error of your ways and things will likely only get better from here on out...
good story..

Oh, it happens to all of us. Could have been worse! You could have included a new razor as well, which I am guilty of. :tongue_sm

I would have used a new razor as well but the aluminum tech knock off that came with the kit kind of scares me. I don't know anything about it. I guess I should man up and give it a go too. What the heck it's only my face.

I'm laughing... but only because I've done the exact same thing. Lying in bed and trying to sleep with the sensation of open flames on your face is not pleasant at all.

Laugh away, I thought I was being dumb while I was doing it. That cream really helped sooth my skin though.

Ah, but you did not blame the equipment! All to often the tendency is to blame the blade, cream, lather, razor for the lousy shave rather than not doing our homework.

I've been there, introduce too many variables and just not able to make it work. At least you learned something from your mistake.

The first several times I used Derby blades I had a horrible, allergic-type reaction. My face was irritated and covered in little red welts. I almost gave up on DE shaving right there. I think it had something to do with the coating they put on them.

I'm still using the Derbys (I made the mistake of ordering 100 of them instead of a sampler), but it has improved immeasurably. I took the advice of someone on this forum and sort of strop each side of the blade on the heel of my hand to take some of that coating off.

We've all been there - feel like a kid in a candy store when that package arrives. Nothing wrong with that. The fun starts now - figuring out those variables one by one to improve on that last shave.

Today's shave went great. Same blade, same shave stick, same everything except I made my lather in a bowl. I just need to learn how to face lather.
