What's new

So. I dropped my razor today.

I was messing around in my antique medicine cabinet today, taking silly pics of my brushes. When I went to shave tonight, I opened the door to grab a different razor and my EJ89 decided to test it's metallurgic integrity against the law of gravity! First it hit the bottom of the cabinet, then skated over the top of the dresser and fell to the tiles below. Probably about 30-34 inch fall!:scared:
I picked it up and checked it over really well and can't see any damage whatsoever. This is my first fall, does this happen to anyone else? I'm sure I saw it hit handle first. I looked over the blade gap and checked the threading. Please tell me my EJ's gonna make it! I love that little guy!:crying:

My first thought afterwards was " Why don't I have a mat or something right here?", so maybe now my AD will kick-in trying to protect my shave den from further acts of clumsiness. Oh brother I need help.:out:

It sounds like you were lucky! One of my Weber handles rolled off the counter and hit the tile floor not too long ago, marring the collar of the handle. No need to install padded walls in the den, accidents happen.

Lol, Wow you are one lucky guy. I have heard horror stories with Ej's sanpping at the thread area, Thank god your made it, that mat sounds like a good idea, i hope my wife doesnt see me laying down the mat, She may think i converted to Muslim :eek:/Not that there is anything wrong with that, But i make a Mean Pork Shoulder

Now I remember that something like this was the reason I stopped electric shaving. I did not really stop, the electric shavor stopped. The same happened to my toothbrush but it survived.

Thank god the razor was not loaded and you did not try to catch it with your hand:scared: When my British Gillette #88 fell, it was loaded with a fresh blade, my reflex kicked in and I tried catching the razor with my right hand, giving a half inch deep cut on my right thumb. Took me couple of weeks to fully heal.

Same thing happened with my Futur about a year ago. Worst cut I have had in shaving.

I am shocked the EJ survived. At least those are fairly replaceable and not a vintage razor, in case there was damage.

Thank god ............... you did not try to catch it with your hand:scared:

Many decades ago I caught a soldering iron that I had knocked off my bench.....wrong thing to do.
The following week I read an article in Popular Mechanics that said ".............never try to catch a falling tool" I remember kicking my *** for not picking up that magazine earlier.

I've never dropped any of my shaving gear...... yet.....

The rule of thumb for anything that takes a fall is to jump back out of the way and once everything has settles down, access the damage.

The only way to tell of the alignment has been foo barred will be to use it. If it shaves differently from one side to the other, it is toast and there is little you can do about it as if you try to "re-tweak" it, more than likely you will snap the threaded post off.

I have Persian carpets in my shave cathedral. These are comfortable on the feet and if something should fall, it will have something luxurious to land on :001_smile

Area rugs are nice both for the feet, and for the accident perspective. If I ever drop a straight razor, I really hope I've gotten my mind past the reflex to try to catch it.

That's a nice shaving den you've got there:drool: Living in space constrained Singapore, I can only dream of such luxurious bathroom - I'll have to pay a significant part of my earnings to get a home with such a big spare bathroom!!

I really hope you do control your reflexes!

My whole body shuddered involuntarily when I read that.

I remind myself before each straight shave to let it fall if it starts to. That should hopefully keep it in my mind, should it happen. Keeping a firm grip is a better plan, for sure. lol

Keeping your hands dry helps a LOT...

When I straight shaved I used a large wet sponge placed in the center of a dry sink to "wipe" the lather off of the blade by moving the blade across the edge of the sponge.

This kept the razor and my hands dry

This also helps in the clean up process for the razor as it is NOT wet so a quick wipe of just the blade with toilet tissue is all it needs before putting it away

I use the sponge thing as well as rubbing my fingers on an alum block for better grip, both of the razor and for skin stretching. It's actually the only thing I use an alum block for. lol

That image will be etched in my brain all day..it happen to me last month.

I dropped the head of my 34C with blade in the sink. I forgot I left it opened up to dry. Went to dip it in some warm water and the head and blade fell off. No damage to the razor. I had just one shave with that Polsilver SI so I shaved with it anyways. Bad choice. If you drop your blade it's toast.

What a beautiful bathroom brother Turtle has to shave in! I am envious.

Shave_Rat says area rugs are good to prevent damage to a falling razor, and I agree. However, area rugs are sort of a mixed bag. I've seen people trip and fall when tripping on the edge of an area rug. Life is not fair and our life experiences are mixed. The only solution is eternal vigilance!

I took another look today at it and found a very small dent on the edge of the bottom. I was sure it landed handle first. Thanks for all the kind words and helpful advice through this troubling time. I am usually very careful and will continue to be. I don't know what to do with the truckload of pillows and bubble-wrap on it's way; I may have over re-acted!:a52:
