What's new

So getting a shavette in a couple days.

Someone from church is offering me his, he said he tried it a few years ago and cut himself a bit. I don't know the brand it is, or the type of blades it takes. He said it took single edge blades, I don't know if it means proprietary blades, injector blades, or double edge blades snapped in half. I'll have to just wait until Sunday to find out. I figured it'd be worth trying, though it does seem somewhat scary. But people even say my DEs seem scary when they're no more dangerous than any other razor. Watched a few videos on youtube explaining things a bit, too.

But yeah, I'll have to update when I actually get it, in the mean time, if it takes DE blades, what blades should I use in it? I like Astras most in my DE razors, but I have:
Feathers
Astra SP
Personna blues (drug store expensive ones)
Derby
Lord
Wilkinson's Sword

I like Astra most in DEs, so yeah.

Astras will work sufficiently in a shavette, but in general it's best to get the mildest you can find. In a DE it can make a shave too rough, at a near flat angle on a shavette, it's completely different.

So probably go with the Personnas, then? I dunno, I'll have to wait until I actually get it and see if it even takes DE or takes proprietary.

It depends. If it's a Sextoblade, it'll work with Personna Hair Shaper blades. Otherwise, it probably uses half DE blades.

So I got it today. Looks like it uses Personna Hair Shaper blades, those are a bit expensive, the guy says if I like it, he'll give me the extra blades he has. I only used it to trim my mustache, so I'll have to wait a day or two to see how it goes, didn't cut myself trimming the mustache, though.

If I like this, either I'll spring for the real deal, or get one that takes DE blades.

So only marking on the razor is "Marianna #310." The blade in it is Fromm. I've only gotten nicks the size of ones I get from a bad DE blade (ie, Derby.) No huge gashes or anything. I've only used it to edge up some things. You can get pretty close, but I'm getting terrible razor burn. It also honestly doesn't seem very sharp, the blade brand is "Fromm." I don't know how good those blades are, but it seems significantly less sharp and has less glide than my DEs do under similar conditions.

Either way, I'm not terrified of straights anymore, like most of the population is, so I'm glad I've popped the straight razor cherry, even if under not so ideal conditions. Hmm.... well, it's at least good to keep around to detail after a DE shave. I also think a shavette that uses broken DE blades would be a bit easier for me, my only nick on the front of my face was the other edge of the blade trying to trim something near my goatee-ish thing, so a shorter blade would help.

Marianna is pretty much a hair shaper razor, and although it might work to an extent, you'll probably do better with a Parker.

Well even just from what I can see of the blade from touching it with my hands, it doesn't seem sharp compared to a DE blade. The Parker Shavette seems reasonably priced, though. I do know someone that's an amateur barber in my neighborhood, though, he might find this hair shaper more useful than me, though, maybe I'll give it to him.
