What's new

So... Chubby 1 in Best

I think I'm going to have to do it. I don't have the money right now, but I am putting a load of stuff up on the BST next week, so depending on how fast that stuff sells, I will be able to purchase the new object of my desire. I think it will compliment my Rooney 1/1 in Super quite well. Between the two, I do believe I will be set (I'm not a collector, and ADs only strike me until I find what I love, then I sell the rest and move on).

All that being said, please fellow B&Bers, regale me with your tales of Chubby 1 glory.

Ready, GO

I'm going to try and save you some money....

I had both and much preferred the Rooney. Softer tips yet still plenty of backbone. The Chubby was too dense and hogged lather, and irritated my face after 3 passes.

YMMV! :)

Hmm... That is good to know. Are you mainly a face or bowl kind of guy? I do a kind of hybrid method where I do most of the work in a bowl and then finish it off with a little face lathering.

I just received a Chubby 1 in super (two-band) and can say that it is awesome. First off, it is not a small brush. Second, it has lots of backbone and slightly scritchy tips, which I like. Third, to my surprise, it does not hog lather! I am a face latherer and find this to be a dead tie with my Rooney 1/1in finest. Go for it...if you don't like it you can always sell it for only a small loss.

It's nice to see jhclaire giving such sound financial brush advice.

The question was about a CH1 in Best which I actually have, its a lovely brush and like all brushes you need time to learn how to use it. The handle is a little on the small side for bowl lathering, not impossible you may rap your knuckles every now and then but it's much better as straight face lathering brush.

The Duke 3 in Best might also be worth considering. Simpson's 2 band hair is very different to Best, in which case the 2 band Colonel might also be worth a look.

I have been thinking about a Duke too... maybe a Duke 1 or 2 though since I do tend to prefer smaller brushes.

So many solid choices. I'm not too worries about bruising my knuckles, I actually am going to sell off my small fancy EJ bowl because I have found that a large cheap cereal bowl actually works better anyway.

That being said I tried some face lathing today with the Rooney and it went very well.

And there is just something about the draw of a chubby...

So after some more looking around, reading, and size researching, I have narrowed down my choices. I have two brushes in mind, both about the same size.

Chubby 1
Duke 2

I know they are too small for some, but they are about the same size as my Rooney 1/1, and I find that to be a perfect size for me.

I have to say that I was disappointed with my Chubby 1 in best. I'd read so much about the density etc, yet I found it was no denser than my Duke 3. Perhaps 'super' is where Chubbies really come into their own, density-wise, but not having tried one of those, I cannot comment. Having said all that, it is a great all round brush and I wouldn't be without my Chubby 1 in my rotation and am delighted to own a little bit of English brush-making heritage.
If it's density you're after, I think a Rooney Stubby 2 would be pretty hard to beat.
