What's new

So about Penhaligon's...

Maybe I missed something, but I have not seen many posts about the new reformulation. Some have said it was an utter failure, while others have said it is acceptable, but not as good as the previous recipe.

So...did Penhaligon's succeed, like Geo F. Trumper did, or did they go to the wayside, like Floris?

The new soap is a good soap. It is not up-to-par with the old formula, however. It produces a slick lather, but there does not seem to be as much cushion as with the old version. I also think the current version has a scent that is more soapy than the original, and not as strong. My problem is the price point. I was willing to pay the higher price for the old version due to its great scent and performance. However, I will not reorder the current version because I can find better soaps, i.e., Trumper, Harris, MWF, AOS, etc. at a much better price.

I thought I read in another thread that the new pucks don't fit the old bowls, can anyone confirm this?

Yes, the new soaps do not fit into the old bowls. The new soaps are wider, but more shallow than the old ones. They are the same overall weight (100g).

Reformulation will probably cost Pehnaligon's some fans, but it's nothing compared to what cutting their prices would do!

At this point, the best I've heard is that the new Penhaligons soaps are good for all-veggie soaps - which means they're not as good as the old tallow stuff. Also, in addition to changing the shape of the puck so that it no longer fits the old bowls, the initial feed back is that the new bowls aren't nearly as nice as the old ones (my hunch is that the shape change is due to the fact that this stuff is being run off on the same production line (and likely using a very similar formula) as that used to make other all veggie products - this is a hunch only and should in no way be taken as gospel).

In short, unless you must have an EF or BB scented soap, there is no reason to spend the $$ on the reformulated stuff.

I am cheap, but could get around the $70 bucks it cost me for the old stuff in a bowl, given that the performance drew rave reviews from some of our most experienced shavers and the bowls were head and shoulders nicer than anything else out there. But as I said above, except for the scents, there is nothing unique about either the new soap or packaging that justifies the price point.

I spent a couple of weeks directly comparing the new and old formulations by alternating shaves with them and also by lathering up back to back. My nose is not that good, but the new formulation is a little more strongly scented than the old. I think the old offers a slightly better lather, but have concluded the new formulation has given me better lubrication (if that's the right term) in that the same razor will seem to pull less with the new formulation than the old. I also have the impression that the new formulation seems a little better at moisturizing. I actually like it, but agree with others that it is not a good deal - I am not convinced it's better than Trumper's or T and H, but I do plan on continuing to use it in the future. My favorite remains the Trumper's Rose, but I prefer this over the English Fern old formulation, too.

Tallow in soap is a necessary ingredient but just because tallow is in the soap doesn't mean that the soap is good. That said EF and BB with tallow in it is, without a doubt, the best hard soap that I have tried. I have tried the BB with tallow further down the ingredient list and although it was good it lacked the world class attributes that the tallow first products had. It was just top of the class triple milled soap and I will miss it when I am finished with my 3 pucks, which will be quite a while. Given my age I promise to have my wife PIF it forward to someone with at least 2000 posts if I expire before the last one is done.

Forevermore I will look at Penhaligon's products with a jaundice eye because if they can ruin a soap like that then the same bean counter leadership will do what they want with the rest of their line with no sense that they are betraying the discriminating customers that have made the company what it is.

Take Care,
Richard

Please ask her to think of me when the time comes! I'll get to work posting in order to hit that minimum post count.
