SMN vs Proraso Red

SMN is different from the current production green Proraso soap because SMN has less menthol and it contains lanolin. But so did the now discontinued Proraso Red. Does this mean SMN is the same or the closest to Proraso Red?

It is correct to say that SMN and the Red Proraso are lanolin based products with less menthol compared to the Green Proraso. However, that aside, these two products are quite different in formulation, consistency and scent. SMN is a top shelf soft soap with a light mentholated fragrance and is VERY, VERY moisturizing. The Red Proraso was a low cost soft cream with a unique sweet scent of wheat germ oil and was also slightly less moisturizing than SMN. I love both.

I just used SMN today ....what a treat !!

Me too, really good. Had a splash of SMN AS and this afternoon bought the matching cologne for a longer lasting scent. At the same time bought SWMBO a bar of SMN Melangrano bath soap. That scored several brownie points. Damn I like SMN!

If you don't mind me asking.Where did you get the matching SMN aftershave and cologne?

I've tried them all and the Ruso AS and cologne simply speaks to me. Not that the others are not great. Love SMN everything as well. I am considering going for the emulsion soon, but .... it kind of smells funky ... it is not scented like the others. Works like a miracle though, especially in winter. LAFCO New York will send you samples of any SMN product for a price - that's how I tried several products before buying. Aiden Gill in New Orleans also has a full line of SMN.

I gave up creams for three years until I tried SMN.

The closest thing I've tried to SMN cream is Acca Kappa 1889 cream, the one with lanolin. It's sweet almond and it is really good stuff. For 20$ a tub it's a steal also. It's not as uber protective to the skin as SMN, but it is becoming a favorite of mine. See Mark's review on it. I love this one and I am a grumpy jerk about stuff that does not work well.

I don't miss it quite yet. It'll be awhile... :001_rolle

You sound like you must have stocked up like I did. I bought three tubes around 3-4 years ago and got them for next to nothing (bought them from Bigelow's IIRC). I'm almost finished with tube #2, so I've got what remains of it and one more to go.

Lets not forget the wonderful camphor in SMN.
