What's new

small shaving soap puck recommendation

Hi all,

I have this scuttle I got recently. I liked it because it has a design on it that reminded me of an old Jim Flora type painting. Jim Flora did some covers for some old Jazz artists I like, such as Sidney Bechet. Anyway, the top has the soap "dish" area is kinda small - 2.5" dia. by 1" deep. I would like to put in a nice quality soap into it, but need a recommendation. I don't want to put a puck of Williams into it as I don't like that brand so much.

Any recommendations?

Vinitage Williams, EJ, Hasslinger
I may go with an EJ. I'm kinda an EJ guy already. I have a modified EJ DE89bl with a bulldog handle (love the new handle) and a EJ super badger brush.

Thought, I'm thinking a Schick '66 injector or a Merkur Blue barberpole would go with the scuttle too.

I think a puck of Edwin Jagger soap is perfectly sized to fit in that scuttle.

Edit: It appears I'm too slow today. The Sea Buckthorn is sublime, BTW.

Provence Sante Green Tea is terrific and not too big. Bigger than Haslinger, which is also a high quality small puck.

I think that I remember that GFT Oxford Blue is a small refill that is made for that type of scuttle. Classic Shaving used to make one as well but it is not the best soap. T&H makes a small refill puck that might fit and it is a fine soap with a light lavender scent.

Doug

I have one of these and I find that it doesn't work very well with any soap. What I do is this, I fill it with the hottest water I can get out of the tap and then set my lathered brush on its side on top of it between passes just to keep it warm. It was just a mess with any of the soaps that I tried.

I'll have to look at the contents next time I order. What happens to Lanolin with heat?

MWF has lanolin (and is too big for the scuttle). Lanolin is great, but melts with much heat, so not a good soap for a scuttle because it will lather awful. Warm water works much better for lanolin soaps/creams.
