Slumming it with Maxwell House

Ran out of beans at the office today. The coffee cult and myself are slumming it with the pre-measured Maxwell House packets :crying:.

After we've been bringing in our own beans and grinding for a month it's really hard to go back! Looks like there will be an emergency Starbucks run.

...Actually finished a bag of Komodo Dragon yesterday, we all agreed it's the best so far... Which makes stomaching this that much more difficult :001_rolle.

I know this place has no love for Starbucks, but any suggestions? (I have a couple of gift cards.)

All of Starbucks blends are over-roasted. That being said, the Starbucks coffee that I find the most palatable is Caffe Verona. It's a dark roast but doesn't taste burnt. You can still taste a trace of the roast, but the flavor is pretty good and quite creamy.

You won, Sumatra was out of stock so the decision was easier :001_smile.

Just brewed a pot. Not bad at all, unfortunately I can't give you more feedback (I'm the only coffee cult member that showed for work today... :001_huh:)

I still can't figure out why people drink sub-par coffee day in and day out...

...Then again, I'm asking this on a forum where practically everyone, including myself, couldn't imagine going back to a cartridge razor... ...or a disposable ballpoint pen... (I'm also a diehard Linux/Mac fan, can't figure out why everyone uses Windows, while hating it...)

Make sure the expiration date is 7 months in the future or as close to that as possible. They date them 7.5 or more likely 8 months out from when they're roasted. Also, they've been known to mix old beans with newer ones from time to time, so the single origins are safer than the blends because it's easier to hide stale old beans in a blend. Otherwise, yeah they're all over roasted, but go for whatever region you prefer.

If you guys want a superior cup of coffee, step up to Mello Joy http://www.mellojoy.com/

That weak stuff where you can see the bottom of your cup when it is full is completely out of order.

The way we measure a good cup of coffee is when you stick a spoon in the cup and it disintegrates.

Us Cajuns don't hide the taste with cream and sugar either.

Never heard of Mello Joy. How does it compare to Community? I must say that I really enjoy their chickory blend.

Similar, but to me Mello Joy is richer. I drink the decaf which is dark roasted and I don't miss the caffeine at all.

Read this about the company's history: http://www.mellojoy.com/PageDisplay.asp?p1=7808. The "regional competitor" who bought Mello Joy in 1976 and phased it out was Community Coffee.

I think Mello Joy is the best.
