Slots in Bottom Plate? Purpose?

I was thinking, what are the slots for in the bottom plate of all DE solid/straight bar razors? They must serve some purpose, but I don't see how a solid bottom plate wouldn't give just as good of a shave.

So if the slots weren't there the lather would just get pushed out to the sides. Seems the razor would still be easy to rinse without the slots.

I will pay more attention on the next shave to see how much lather actually comes out of the slots.

I just shaved and paid attention to the slots. The lather doesn't come out of the slots while shaving. The lather builds up on the front of the bar and sometimes overlaps and might make it look like lather is coming out of the slot, but it's really not. I guess the only reason they are there is for when you rinse the razor.

If that's true then your shaving angle's likely too steep. The guard bar shouldn't be clearing all the lather before the blade gets there.

I dont think it really clears ALL the lather but it does build up on the front of the bar.

The slots are there to hold the wax spots in place.

Also, it's so you can read the numbers on the blade while the blade is still in the razor (how cool is that).

Grow your beard for a week, shave with an open comb micromatic, and then shave with a clog pruf. You'd learn fast what a difference the slots make with growth...

I always watch the lather coming through my R41. I love how it doesn't clog. One or two passes with the Fusion and I had to clean it out with a little brush.

Even if lather is not going through the slots, at the very least the slots allow for the passage of air. Not only do "no slots" versus "slots" make a difference in the shave, but the type of slots make a difference. I get better shaves with a triangular slotted Tech compared to a rectangular slotted Tech.
