slippery futur

I recently picked up a chrome futur. I really like the razor, but the chrome finish leaves a bit to be desired as far as keeping a grip when wet and/or soapy. I'm going to try a temporary fix that I hope will improve the situation. I don't want to permanently mar it, and haven't found a grip to fit. However, I think that perhaps a single wrap of black electrical tape will not mar the looks too bad, and provide a slight grip improvement. Any thoughts or ideas here? Thanks.

I always liked the heft of the Futur but I don't like the pop-off cap design and I wish it had a deeply knurled handle for a better grip. You might try dipping the handle in liquid vinyl. It is sold as a dip for tool handles and also as liquid electrical tape. Home Depot has it. It won't be pretty but it will improve the grip, I think. Give it a try. It ought to peel right off if you don't like it. Or better yet, wrap it with some sort of cord or string, and then dip it.

I build fishing rods, and have a lot of different thread around. I might have to try doing some sort of decorative wrap if the electrical tape doesn't work out. But the more I think of it, the more I like the idea. I might have to peel the tape off and get the thread out this evening. If I do, I'll try to get some pictures up.

I have several very slippery razors. Another member had the idea of simply applying some Alum on your fingers. Works like a charm!

My problem is that I don't have alum. It works if I wipe my fingers and handle dry when I need to, but it would be nice not to have to as often. Here's something I threw together in a couple of minutes. If it works, I'll retie it and take some additional time to balance things out at little better. There is very little buildup on the grip, and it has more traction than the straight chrome. I used burgundy metallic thread with silver metallic trim.

Electrical tape is pretty slippery, wet.

The Japanese technique for kamisori -- wrap string around the handle -- should be much better. Fishing-rod thread should work nicely. Varnished fishing-rod thread (coarse, I think) should be semi-permanent and very effective. You probably know how to finish-off a lashing already.

When car steering wheels were made of wood, people would wrap the rims in butcher string, and soak it with Duco cement. That improved the grip a lot.

My Futur is very slippery, too. I took a piece of electrical heat shrink over the handle. It works really well now. I'll send a pic, if there is a couple of interested folks....(cost a couple bucks)

I have seen where someone used the grip from a pen on the handle. It looked nice, and functional. I will try to fin the pic

I used a product that's been around forever, got it from the hardware store. It's called "friction tape", and is not the same thing as the smooth tape commonly called electrical tape. We see it all the time on baseball bats. I used it on my Chrome Futur and it works great. Easy going on and coming off.

Now there's a Futur for sale in the B/S/T forum that has something the owner/seller calls a "grip improver". It looks like it was custom made for the Futur because it fits the handle exactly. I would love to find out where it came from, and I think a lot of guys would buy one (or more) for themselves. Someone has already posted to ask the seller where he got it.

Dry your hands.

Works for me :001_smile

I keep a number of them around the sink... AND a couple hanging on towel bars nearby

like turtle, i keep a towel at hand next to the sink.

i dry my hands before picking the Futur up. as lather accumulates on the Futur i rinse it off before it runs down the handle. after the rinse i give it a shake. if necessary during the shave i wipe off my hands and the Futur handle on the towel, but rarely find that necessary.

it is an easy routine and i find the smooth handle a non issue.

why go through the trouble of drying your hands/razor 50 times a shave when you can just put a grip on it? Not trying to be a smartass.. *cough*
