Slims And Supers - Your Experience?

Have an urge to try either a Slim Adjustable or a Super but I don't have any experience with either... For reference I currently use a Fatboy when the retro adjustable mood strikes and I've had others; Mergress, Vision, Futur. I think I'm leaning towards a longer handle than the Fatboy as well. My all time go to razor is a Tradere SB so the adjustable is for the times I feel like dialing up some more bite. What's your thoughts?

I prefer my Slim to my SA - just feels better balanced.
Never tried a modern adjustable, but I don't think you're ever going to get more bite than from a Futur.....

" I don't think you're ever going to get more bite than from a Futur....."

Probably true, the rest of the razor just didn't "click". A little less razor, a little more grip surface might have done the trick. The hunt is part of the fun anyway!

I have a Slim, FB, Toggle, Black Beauty, two Mergesses, Schick adjustable, and PAL adjustable. I also had a Futur at one time and sold it. As you can see, I am a big fan of adjustables. If I were to rank the DE adjustables it would be as follows:

  1. the two Mergresses
  2. FB
  3. Slim
  4. Toggle
  5. Black Beauty

For me the Mergress is the smoothest of the lot.

fatboy and Slim for me. Don't have a Super Adjustable (Black Beauty) yet. I don't know how anyone would need for "bite" than any of those set on 9. I tend to like the looks of the fatboy but the handling of the Slim better.

I'm kinda thinking a Fatboy with a longer handle might be where i'm headed, thus the Slim seems to be calling to me. I had a long handle Mergress that is on my list of regretted sales! I also had good results with that razor, it just got caught up in the turnover syndrome.

The slim was my first vintage razor let alone an adjustable, it went hand in hand with anything I was using. I then went on a BB splurg and bought both long and short handles, plastic base and a gold one. Sold then all and went back to the slim. The shave was just all wrong regardless of blade. Then a short handle BB came up for a few quid on the bay. The slim went on dispaly and it stayed there. The new BB was just better than all the others, it felt right, looked right and shaved like a dream. Set on 7 it was superb. That was afew years back. I'm now in a longer term relationship with the Cobra Classic, but the BB is the first razor on the dispaly stand in my den. :001_smile

I have used futur, progress, slim, SA and fatboy. The futur shaved very well, but was traded off. Of the other 4, I like them about the same, but they shave slightly differently. The fatboy would probably be my last choice if I had to choose. The rest are too close to call.

I have only used the Slim. Not a bad razor but I just wasn't particularly impressed with it and have sold it since. I think I just don't like TTO heads.

With the proviso of YMMV I've found the Fat Boy and the Slim to be very close in settings and the SA is more aggressive settingwise.

In my case 9 all day long on the Fat Boy, 8 sometimes 9 on the Slim and don't dare go over 6 on the SA.

I have a Mergress and a Slim. The Slim is lighter and considerably less aggressive. The Mergress is smoother and does a better job - but it should for the price difference. The Slim is a fine razor.

So my next question then, I see that the base plate material on the Black Beauties changes from year to year. Which years are desirable if there is preference?
