slight bend in the head

Hey guys ... so after dealing with the discoloration of my razor, I now have discovered a slight bend or "slant" in the head of the HD. This is making one side of the razor more aggressive than the other. Is this supposed to be this way? I didn't usually use both sides on any given shave, so I didn't notice this before.

The top part might be a little convex from left to right because of the way it is made but it shouldn't be slanted; can't you put the blade in the right position just before tightening? If not you could turn the top-part 180 degrees and see if that makes a difference.

If this all doesn't help and the condition of your HD is noticable in the shave you should contact your vendor. Merkur does have a reputation for a lack of QC now and then....

Can you get a pic of each side and post it here for comparison? Perhaps we'd be able to help more if we could see it.

You realize TPedora85 that if you post a pic and it turns out that your razor is actually a Merkur slant you're going to get a cyber-spank. :001_tongu

But seriously, if it's an HD then it sounds like something is wrong. I've had Merkurs with problems like that and send them right back for a replacement. My Fatboy is also a bit like that...I think it was dropped and the safety bar is bent down a bit on one side, making the gap a bit bigger on that one side and thus 'more aggressive'.

Yes, a pic would be most helpful in confirming the diagnosis. :001_smile

This is the picture I sent the vendor. I received an email back saying that there were no noticeable issues with the pictures I sent. Thoughts guys?

Well he just said that the gap difference was normal. Maybe something I should take directly to Merkur? So i'm not crazy?

I ordered one from WCS and it showed up this way. They sent me a new one after I emailed them pictures. Granted, WCS is one of the best vendors, but I think you should be able to do the same with whoever you bought it from.

Pretty appalling. A good rule of thumb is that the gap on one side shouldn't be twice that on the other.

A blind man on a galloping horse can see the things not straight.
Send them another email with a link to this thread and add that you haven't named them as the vendor...yet.

Hmmmm good to know. Like I said, I emailed the vendor and he made it sound like this is a normal occurence for the HD's ... did your replacement have the same problem?

I'll defer to others with more experience, but I just took my HD out and checked it with and without blade. Mine does not have that gap issue. The head on yours looks like it's not screwing down all the way.

That's an awfully large gap to be "normal". I'd contact the manufacturer. That essentially guarantees that you'll have two distinctly different results depending on which size you use.

Dude, that razor has got serious issues...it should be sent back for a replacement. The gap is obviously much larger on one side than the other, unfortunately not an uncommon occurrence on modern Merkurs.

The handle doesn't seem to be tighted all the way down. The posts are at an angle and there's a gap on the right side of the handle. Someone could look at the picture and suggest you tighten it down more. Is there a shim or something under the blade?

More likely the stud in the cap is not perpendicular to it, preventing the cap settling down properly. If the vendor's unresponsive, Merkur has a good record of responding to problems like this.

Thanks guys, glad Im not crazy. Well, doesn't look like going through the vendor is going to work. Hopefully Merkur is a little more helpful.

Here's a reply to another Merkur owner from the person you should contact:

Thank you very much for your email. We have a 10 year warranty on our products for production or material faults. This DOES NOT include normal wear and tear, or abuse and misuse. This warranty is honored no matter where you buy a new MERKUR razor.
