Slicked back look part II

I have been using Bryclreem for my hair after it has almost dried. Followed by some Consort Extra Hold Unscebted hair spray to keep it in place. Thank you to all the B&B ers that suggested Bryclreem. My problem is after I apply the cream and hairspray I get white flakes on my brush. What causes this?

Secondly, is the a water based cream that has a high hold and shine to give me that wet look? Or another combination that might work? What about Vitalis and hairspray?

Thank you all for your time.

Best,
Jerry

Apparently some guys really like Grant's Golden Pomade. It's $22 a tin for about 5oz. High hold, high shine, water-based. I'm going to buy some when I finally get a decent paycheck.

I'd suggest Groom & Clean by Suave. It should be in the same section of the grocery store/pharmacy as the Brylcreem in a white and blue box (looks like it should be toothpaste or something like that). $5 to $7 depending on where you get it. Water based and washes out no problem in the shower.

I've used both Brylcreem and Groom in clean with no flakes, I'd think it's probably the hairspray that giving you that, unless you have dry scalp, which is another issue.

I comb my hair pompadour style with a part, and I've never been able to use Brylcreem. It simply has no hold, and my thick hair falls apart with it. I wonder how it works for anyone?

I just have a simple business cut with a part, I have very thick hair too but Brylcreem and Groom and Clean both have enough hold for me. I'd go to say that Brylcreem has more hold and lasts longer, but can be a bit heavy feeling to me.

I like Groom and Clean also. I used Brylcreem for months and found it to be a tad bit greasy compared to G&C. IMO

So using either brylcreem or groom and clean should just be enough without the hairspray? Is it better to have hair that has a slicked back look and is pallet able? Or a high shine and feels like turf grass? I'm
new to using products like this (brylcreem groom and clean, hairspray) in my hair. I like my hair to have a firm hold but what are the advantages of not using hairspray?

You may want to try hair gels, which tend to have a firmer hold and kind of harden in place. At least the ones I have tried have done this. Brylcreem works well for me but I have pretty fine, and thinning, hair so there is not a lot to hold in place, but I could see it not working very well for people with thicker hair, especially if there is a little wave or curl action.

@Jawaburger

That is an excellent idea! What hair gels would you recommend? I've never used hair gels. I have mostly used hairspray and I've found I just don't like the way it hardens and crunches. I'd like to have that slick wet look like on mad men if possible.

Layrite is good, but I tend to favor Royal Crown. Note it's petroleum, so you gotta deal with that aspect, but it's the most "authentic" look and feel you can get.

I am a bit of a pomade connoisseur. I have many wax/petroleum/water based brands. If anyone ever has a question, please feel free to ask or PM me. Something nice and along the lines of brylcream that has some hold is Dapper Man. Nice pomade that washes out.

A man after my own heart IssacRN. I would also recommend Murrays given it's following. Or another source for super high hold wax is American Greaser Supply.
