Slant vs. Slant Gold

Hi all,

I'm currently in the final stages of buying my base shaving hardware, and have a shopping cart full of items that I'm going to order online, including: Santa Maria Novella crema da barba, Musgo Cream, TOBS avocado cream and a Merkur slant.

I've spent an incredible amount money on shaving stuff this year but it's all slowing paying of in terms of shave quality, my most recent purchase was a Shavmac Silvertip brush. Brilliant!!

Before I go and get my slant can someone tell me what the difference between the gold one and the silver one is? I read a little while ago that the gold one offers better alignment of the blade somehow; can anyone verify this?

Once i have all these I'll get a 100 pack of Feather blades and start realy honing my skills to get the perfect shave. And eventually build a cabinet for all my stuff. hehe:thumbup:

Thanks, thats a good post, so as I take it, it's the contrasting colours that makes it easier to visually align the blade.

Good advice. i'll get that one.

Go For The Gold!

It's simple really.

1) You're going to keep this for years, and Gold only increases in value.
2) It looks better.
3) It makes the blade alignment much easier because the chrome of the blade offsets against the gold of the safety bar. This amazingly useful thread illustrates it better than can be said: http://badgerandblade.com/vb/showthread.php?t=87841

+1 : The gold contrasts with the color of the blade, making it easier to see if it's placed right. I wouldn't consider the gold plating as an investment or something to increase in value though.

I bought gold because it's a little easier to align the blade and because I think it looks sharp. It is not that much more expensive than the chrome one. However, I'm sure each would give an equally awesome shave, so it's your choice.

Thanks for the tip, the site I'm ordering from actually has them both at $40 so it's an easy choice I guess.

Hold on. Hold on. "Gold" Merkur razors are not plated with real gold. There is no gold in them whatsoever. They are "gold chrome". That is, it's a chrome plating made to look like gold. No actual gold is involved. Sorry.

I would recommend getting the Sledgehammer Slant (39C) which I don't think is available in a Gold finish ... the extra weight and handle length make a huge difference.

No Au? How did you find this out? I always assumed it was Gold Plated.

Well, I was working from the fact that few, if any, vendors refer to them as "18 carat gold plated" or something that would lead you to believe they were anything but "gold colored" However, I must stand corrected.

From Em's place, a trustworthy vendor we have the following:

"Did you know? All Merkur razors in gold are gold plated in a galvanic bath (not just gold colored). Gold plating is done over a nickel layer and we are talking about 18 carat, hard-gold plating (technical term for a method where other components like cobalt, silver and copper come with the gold) to give not only the warm shine but also being hard enough not to come off. 18 carat means 75% pure gold and 25% additive of other metals or chemicals."

I have the 37c and g and the hammer on its way as a loan to try out. Even tho they both shave identically the g is my favorite of the 2. I just loaned the c out for a "test drive threw the B&B Razor Lending Consortium, check it out its a terrific concept and potential moneysafer.

It was actually the only site I could find that did international shippng for the Santa Maria Novell creme I want too. They have quite an impressive range.

Yes they do, the cheapest I've seen for the 37g. But really high on shipping. I just got my g thru west coast for $42 and shipping was about $2.50. Thanks tho they have almost everything
