Slant Razors: What's All The Fuss About?

A while ago I bought a Merkur slant razor and wrote about it here. Despite being a long time DE shaver I had never tried a slant before.

Recently I purchased a vintage Hoffritz slant razor and have been using it off and on for about two weeks now. The razor has seen some hard times and it is not a thing of beauty. However, it equals its younger brother in performance.

Both are terrific razors.

So now after many years of DE shaving I fully understand what the fuss is all about. Getting a close and smooth shave with the same razor. The only downside is now I have too many "favorite razors" and not enough time to use them as much as I would like.

Hi,

I have been shaving with several models of DE for nearly 40 years. My usual is two passes. The first with a Super Speed Red Tip or a New Long open Comb. The second with a Tech. Works well for me, but does mean I use two razors. When I travel, it is with a Tech only and it means I need a third 'half pass' to touch up some spots.

As it happens, I shaved with a Slant for the first time this morning. Used it alone. First pass was good, and I could have stopped there. I did a second pass anyway, and got my usual shave. But, the kicker for me is I did it with only one razor. And, I am sure I will get it to one pass as I get used to it. Nice!

And it is nowhere near as likely to produce weepers or irritation the way my New LC can, and my Old Type OC is even more likely to let out some blood. The Slant's rep is undeserved....

For me, the only downside to Slant razors is that can't use them often enough. I (and many others) have found that Slants do their best work when they are fed plenty of whiskers, so it is reserved for those shaves when I can give it 3+ days of stubble. The more I feed it, the better it works.

I have other razors that are optimized for 1-day and 2-day shaves, but nothing takes it down like a Slant. I just wish I could use mine more often.

On the other hand I have been using my 37 c almost exclusively. I shave every day and get a shave equal to what would be my other daily shaver--a Joris. No irritation ,weepers .nicks, etc. and a long lasting dfs.So what we have here is a ymmv. Enjoy your shaving!
