Skin Chemistry Fail :(

So we were at the local mall yesterday to check out a couple of sales, and we cut through Macy's at it connects two different wings and saves a little time. I slowed down a bit through the cologne and perfume section, and among all the various trendy stuff I saw a tester bottle of Shalimar. I was excited; it has such a good rep, and the reviews at Basenotes are very positive, so it's been on my "to try" list for some time.
It smelled gorgeous in the bottle, but after trying a tiny bit on my skin it quickly turned from "amazing" to "posh prune soda." Seriously- I smelled exactly like some sort of richly layered Dr. Pepper. DH was very nice about it, but after half an hour spent hoping for a miraculous change of scent I went and found a restroom and scrubbed it off. Stupid skin chemistry. #sighs# I was really looking forward to that one. Oh well, at least I found out before I cold-bought a sample.

What's wrong with smelling like Dr. Pepper?

Now I just need to find something that makes me smell like Rocky Rococo's pizza sauce.

Hey, it happens. I really love Blenheim Bouquet but I can't wear it -- the scent quickly degrades & turns to this awful, crappy mush on my skin. C'est la vie. Fortunately, there are lots of other scents out there.

Same here, love the smell out of the bottle but cannot wear it. :crying:

Try Habit Rouge. It's essentially the male version of Shalimar.

I favor the EdP version, Beau Cavalier.

+1 HR is esentially Shalimar reformulated for the mens.

Isn't Beau Cavalier just the EdP in a special bottle? I have a decant of the EdP and love it, I think it's the best version. Might have to wear it tomorrow :001_tt1:

Thin, clear liquids would be better than thick, staining sauces! Just like no one would intentionally put sticky Dr. Pepper on their skin.

Yes, Beau Cavalier is simply the EdP strength with a fancy name and different bottle. Very similar. Noses in the know say it has a wee bit of agarwood in it, different from the EdT.

I just find it more refined, fresher and smoother than the EdT. Also, the EdP strength gives it more legs.

Thank you for the suggestions, as well as the sympathy- they're well appreciated. I'll look into Habit Rouge; it would be just like my skin to have a scent aimed at men work on me while one aimed at women does not. And if it doesn't work on me, I'll just give it to DH, and either way, someone wins :001_smile

Same problem here... scents change dramatically on me. The flip side is
that scents also disappear on me rather quickly.

Yeah, I had the same experience with Yves Saint Laurents M7.

On me it smells like a barbershop aftershave. Really sharp, almost minty, but on my wife it was a lot spicier, which balanced out the sweeter notes.

It's supposed to be a masculine frag, but it smells 10 x better on her.
