single edge blades

hi,
how many shaves should i expect to get from single edge blades on average.should i expect the same performance as DE blades? my first purchase for SE blades has been the Gem Bluestar, but i have been told there are better ones out there! thanks regards.

It depends on the type of blade. Some blades only give two good shaves while others give six or more. Some people like to stretch their blades to the max while others discard their blades once they become somewhat dull. In general top-tier blades do last longer.

I get 5-7 from a Treet carbon steel. Many people push SE blades beyond that though. I could probably get a couple more out of mine, but I don't bother.

The GEM blue stars are good, but remember they are carbon steel. It helps to pat them dry with a towel after each shave or they'll develop a layer of rust by the next time you use it. Little more maintenance than stainless but i prefer carbon.

I have a fairly light beard so I get 10-14 days out of a stainless SE.

Less out of the carbon blades but I think that is because I don't use them every day and the carbon blade edge oxidizes which makes them appear to dull faster.

I want to put aside the time to use a carbon blade daily just to see how long it will last compared to what I get out of the stainless blades

What if you left a carbon steel blade in the razor submerged in barbicide? How would it effect the razor and blade?

Barbicide is diluted with water. What does water do to carbon steel blades? Never leave anything in Barbicide longer than 10 minutes.

About the only thing you can do is make sure the bade is dry and use it daily until it stops being comfortable

Although I can get 4 or 5 days out of the carbon blades (I've been using Treets), I've found that after 3 great shaves I feel a bit of tugging, and since these things aren't all that expensive, I generally just put in a new one after the third shave. My beard is pretty heavy. And, yes, I do air dry the blades between shaves, and I 'rotate the tires,' turning it around after each day.
