Simpson Commodore X3

So I ended up pulling the trigger on one of these this week. Was considering the Keyhole, but read somewhere that these knots are not as dense as the typical Simpson's brush. Anyone have any experience with this one? Not too much chatter regarding it out there.

X3 was my first Simpsons out of 4 so far. I'm glad I bought it. I think it's the most underrated Simpsons brush. I liked it's size better than the Colonel in the same price range. I bought mine from Jarrod at thesuperiorshave because I was able to see exactly the brush I was going to buy. It has 23 mm knot and 52 mm loft. The handle is more comfortable to me than the Colonel's as well (I have a Colonel in Super). I think it's the right introductory Best badger brush for guys that like average size brushes. The knot is not too dense but is very well packed. It's a typical Simpsons Best hair. I don't know if it's relevant to talk about softness because it's very subjective, and everyone knows how Simpsons knots deviate from any specs or framework. To me, my 58 in Best was a step up from the Commodore mainly due to the better handle and slightly denser knot. I suspect the 58 is as dense as the Duke 3 but with a higher loft. In general, I prefer a millimeter or two loftier brushes for better flow through.

Thanks for the info. I've had several silvertips, but this will be my first simpson, and best seems to be their most popular hair grade. I also want something that the wife will like as well...

Congrats on the purchase, Phil. You will like the brush. Please post a photo and your thoughts when it arrives. Simpsons Best is an outstanding grade of hair.

The X3 was my favorite Simpsons brush. I've tried the Colonel, Chubby, Duke, PJ, Emperor and Commodore. Using a great brush and knowing it was half what the others were and performs as good or better helps in my opinion. I sold mine to help fund the try out of another and do miss it a lot. Now, my Chubby was in two band, so that's not a good comparison to my X3 in best. The Emperor was also 2 band. Still, the X3 is a GREAT brush at a good price.

Shows out for delivery today, so hopefully I will have a new toy. (Like I need another).

Wife is home today, need. to. be. careful!

Couldn't have gotten luckier! Maybe the key is to have things delivered on Friday if possible. I always notice delivery is the earliest on Friday.

And the reveal...

That's the lather bowl I bought for the wife. She is a bowl latherer. Truthfully, I kept her in mind when buying this brush, so it is not all for me.

The handle has a nice heft to it, and the knot really feels more like a TGN Silvertip to me. We'll see after a first lather. This Simpson's thing might be a problem...:crying:

How exciting! I've been trying to pick one out to pickup in the near future and have been eyeballing the X1. Looking forward to the pics!

Oh and there they are, didn't hit reply for a few minutes. Very nice! I know there's the difference in height and loft, but is there much a difference in density of the knot?

I don't have access to an X1 for a direct comparison, but in my experience, just because a knot is smaller in diameter, does not mean it is any less dense. My guess is that the X1 at 20MM diameter would be equally as dense as the X3 at 24MM, but I'm sure the experts will chime in.

Let us know what you think of it? My one simpson brush is lonely cant decide which one to get next!! Are you gonna face lather with it?

Ok, so I had a chance to do some playing around with the Simpson Commodore X3. Had already shaved after it got here, so just test lather runs. I will say it lathers really well. Really, really well. I can see why there is such Simpson's love around here. A note on the bowl I used. This is the $15.00 hand thrown lather bowl from West Coast Shaving. Stop now, go there, buy one, then come back and finish the rest of this post. I am a dedicated face latherer, and this thing has made me rethink that. It will definitely get used for the loooong shaves where I have alot of time to play with the lather. It's that good. So now, on to the brush porn!

The unsuspecting victim, one "Dr. Selby", innocent enough, and a little green around the gills so to speak...

A fine soap, waiting to meet "The Commodore"

He's chillin' in a bath...

Then they get together... This is an approximate 40 sec load...

No water added, and another 45 secs of swirling in the lather bowl...

Oops, that's 5 pix, continued in next post...
