Simpson Chubby versus the Classic 2

I'm contemplating buying another brush and I've settled on either a Chubby 1 (or 2, maybe) or a Classic 2.

I've primarily interested in the density comparison between the Chubby and the Classic; I'm looking for something that mimics the knot in my M7 (fairly high and very dense).

Anyone used both of these brushes and can comment on their densities? Side by side pics would also be very helpful.

The chubby will usually be one of Simpsons densest offerings. The 3 bands being denser than the 2 bands. Can't speak yet for the modern manchurians, have some on order and should be able to compare soon.

I want a Chubby, but dunno which of the 3 sizes I'd want prolly a max of #2...heard the #3 is massive and kinda over kill.

I find the Classic 2 to be comparable in density to the Chubby. Backbone will be greater in the Chubby because of the larger diameter knot. Choice really depends on what size brush you like.

Personally I would get the Chubby 2. It is iconic and is really an boon if you have a large soap stash to work through :biggrin1:

The correct answer is to BUY BOTH

The Classic 1 or 2 are amazing smaller brushes. If you want a Chubby get a 2 or a 3.

I would recommend Chubby 2 in best badger or 2-band ; I do not like Simpsons 3-band super badger as it not much different than best badger, and it is $$$. The 2-band is also $$$ but gives a great combination of backbone and softness.
I also have a Chubby 1 in 2-band and the Classic 2 in best, and feel it is a toss up as to which I like better. They both provide adequate backbone and knot density and do an excellent job. I would think that the Chubby 1 in best would be very similar to the
Classic 2 in best, so that comparison is really a toss-up. If I had to create an order of preference, Chubby 2 2-band > Chubby 1 2-band = Classic 2 best badger > Chubby 1 best badger.

My Chubby 2 in Best is my go to brush. Great backbone, nice and soft. It gets more use than any brush in my rotation. The Chubby 3 is in fact overkill, but a great brush.

Are the Chubby 2's in two band still available? I can't seem to find one for sale anywhere.

I do not know, but I have contacted Simpsons personally and they told me they can probably handle any request I make. The point being that they would probably make one for you.

The Classic 2 and Chubby 1 are pretty close in terms of handle/loft height and knot diameter, with the Chubby 1 being just a bit denser. The Chubby 2 is definitely bigger compared to these two.

If you have a bunch of $$$, Simpsons website still has a Butterscotch Chubby 2 in Manchurian badger, here's a link. FYI, it is well over $300.

P.S. I have seen Chubby 1 in 2 band around. I have it, and like it a great deal, but Classic 2 in best is cheaper and just as good IMHO.

Ted, why do you prefer Classic 2 Best over Chubby 1 Best.

I went through a very tough exercise 4-5 years ago to simplify (and hence reduce) my brush rotation. The Classic and the Duke lost out to the Chubby...I just found myself reaching for one of my Chubby's more often. I've done this rotation reduction every single year now and somehow the only regular survivors have been the old Rooney Finests and my Chubby's...everything else seems to be on a timer. Again YMMV.

With regards to 2-band availability, I have an incoming CH3 from Simpson...and if you wait a bit, CS, Bullgoose or WCS should have some inventory soon...the BST is always a good option too...

My Chubby 1 is 2-band, not best. I like the size of the Classic 2 a bit better than the Chubby 1, but it is not that I don't like Chubby 1 in 2-band. It is just that the Classic 2 is about $90 cheaper, is reasonably dense and soft, and lathers nicely. Frankly, if you don't have one I would get the Duke 2 in best. That's a brush I like better than the Chubby 1 or Classic 2. The Duke 2 is just big enough to not be considered a "small" brush and it is a lather machine with great flow through and is not a lather hog. It gives up it's lather easily, even the stuff buried in the hairs. It's really something a physicist or engineer would have to explain. I hope I did not complicate your life, but it needed to be said. Plus, Duke 2 in best goes for $90-100.

No worries, you didnt complicate things for me cause I already have a Duke 2 Best and I absolutely love it. But truth is I've been eyeing the Classic 2 since day one but never did buy it.....I like the Classic 2 shorter loft .....and honestly for me the Classic brushes are the best looking among the lot but doesnt get a lot of mention around here.....

I wanted to get a beautiful Thater but shipping was a major roadblock....so I found myself back to eyeing the Classic 2 once again and reading with keen interest on threads that mentions the Classic 2 such as this one...

Thanks for all the feedback.

I'm sure I will end up with a Chubby 2 at some point. I had a Chubby 1 in Best and it wasn't really to my liking. I found it a bit point and more bulb shaped than I would have preferred. I'll probably try to select one with a more fan shape next time. I think the larger knot on the CH2 would solve some of the "pointy" issue, too.

For now, I'll will probably go ahead with the Classic 2 and give it a whirl. Looks like a nice smaller sized dense brush; just need to make sure it is more on the fan side of the bulb/fan hybrid Simpson spectrum.

My Classic 2 is definitely a fan, and an excellent latherer. Enjoy.
