simpson bowl lathering brushes

In my opinion they are pretty much comparable and better suited for face lathering. If you want a great Simpson for bowl lathering and in a good price-point I'd get a Colonel.

They are both the same

In that regard, get the Simpsons Beaufort...same as the other two but with a cooler handle

Marco has it right on. Neither handle is a natural bowl latherer. Great advice to go with the Colonel, but I do like my Beaufort B4 very much for bowl lathering when I want some scritch.
Main difference besides the handle is the Colonel comes in Best Badger and the Beaufort is only available in Pure Badger.
A step up from those would be the Emperor in Super.

I bowl lather my Duke 2 all the time with no problems. As long as your bowl isn't excessively deep you can bowl lather with any brush.

agreed. i can lather my shorter handled brushes (Thater stout 2 and M&F 2XL) in my DB1.5 with no problems. no clanging, no banging, just loads of lather.

Of the two mentioned, Berkeley or Special, I would pick the longer handled Special. It's a good brush for the money.

+1. As versatile as the Colonel is I agree that it has a penchant for bowl lathering.

if you can up it to a Colonel with the WCS BandB discount it's a fantastic brush. great for face or bowl.

I'd add the Commodore X2 for OP's consideration. It's about $15 more than the Berkely but to me it's a better brush for bowl lathering, even better than the Colonel.

I have both & they're both great brushes. It took a couple of uses but the Berkeley has really grown on me. The Special is a steal pure & simple...actually, they both are.

I'm one to go for brushes I like rather than buying brushes for special purposes or techniques. I like my Chubby 1 and Duke 1, which are probably both considered as face lathering brushes by most. I use them for bowl lathering however, because I like the flatter shape of the knot and better control of smaller knot. As mentioned in a previous post, the bowl makes a big difference. I bought a small shallow scuttle (Georgia Pottery G5), and a small stainless steel bowl which let me bowl lather with ease using these small brushes.
