Silver Plating?

does anyone have access to do silver plating? i have access to do it chemically, but i understand you can get a much thicker plating with the electrochemical route. i have seen a lot of threads on rhodium and nickel, but never silver.

Did you actually find something or was that sarcastic? Tone can be illusive in writing. In any event, I'm curious as well, but I know nothing in response to your original question.

I did several brief Google searches, and this company was at or near the top on every one of my searches: http://www.isilverplating.com/ ... ... I know nothing about them, just that they are prominent in Google's search engine.

Do your own research and see if there might be a jeweler or antique restorater close to your zip code, so you can go talk to them in person instead of dealing through e-Mails and UPS.

I would think that most of these places would have to disassemble any razor you bring to them for replating. Easy enough with a 2 or 3 piece, but it will get tricky with a TTO. You will probably have to bring it to them in pieces. Just make sure you can put it back together before you send it off.

The problem with silver is if somebody's going to all the trouble to replate a razor they probably wanted it plated with a metal with no maintenance not a metal like silver that needs constant polishing.
I suggest you look in your local phone book under plating or metal plating, most large communities have businesses that do plating.
Also visit the shop in person, do not call, your much more likely to get them to do your small job if you show up in person.
BTW. TTO do not have to be disassembled to be replated.

Really?!? I'm so glad to hear that from a reputable source! I have a few TTO's that I was thinking about having replated, but have been holding off assuming that I'd have to first figure out how to disassemble (and reassemble) them. Is there any benefit to disassembly before replating?

Well if you disassemble it you can be sure it's clean, these razor were plated assembled but they were new and perfectly clean

Doesn't the chemical bath they use to strip the old plating pretty much take care of the cleaning issue?

Just because you send an item in for plating doesn't mean they strip it.
Stripping is usually done by reversing the electro plating process.
Chemicals used to clean/degrease an item to be plated might have little or no effect on petrified shaving soap, I've seen this have the consistency of concrete.

So essentially they just replate over funk? Sounds completely logical to me. Maybe a little like the way some apartments have odd things simply painted over on the walls (I lived in a place where there was a fly, painted white by the light switch, stuck in paint on the wall - no kidding). I used to work in concrete and have seen the same thing there as well. Granted, it's different, but the idea's the same - if they're not paid to clean the razor, I suppose, why would they?

That's why I do all my own prep work.
Luckily the NEWs I mainly use were improperly plated, just a gold wash right on top of the copper or brass.
What's left of the gold comes right off with scotch-brite pads, dremel wire wheel and buffing with brown rouge with a loose flannel wheel.
Followed by a soak in lacquer then then a final wash in hot soapy water.

nope was being sarcastic..

thanks for the helpful posts everyone, i would have thought there would be a B&B member that would be doing silver plating though. i may just have my dad do the chemical plating, it will be thin, but can see how long it would last.
