Basically, if it comes in it's own container that I can load from, I leave it in there. If it comes loose like Williams, I keep them in inexpensive stoneware ramekins I buy at Walmart.
Welcome to B&B! Don't fear asking anything. I launched a barrage of seemingly dumb questions when I first started here. Still ask them from time to time.
I keep the soap in the container I purchased it in. Tabac and MWF have nice ceramic containers, and Cella a little red tub, and Mikes is in a metal tin. If I purchase a soap that did not come in a container like Klar Kabinette, I transfer the soap to a small rubbermaid container. In use, I wet my brush and load the brush with soap for about a minute, then build a nice lather on my face, although many use a separate bowl or scuttle to build lather.
You could drop a puck of Col. Conk, or Williams in a coffee cup, and build your lather on top of the puck, works fine too, like a lot of things here, YMMV, so find what works for you.
Welcome, XJJOE! Yes, this most certainly is not a dumb question. I myself keep it in the original container (if it is a nice one) and load my brush off the top of the puck and then either bowl lather or face lather - mostly face lathering though. Sometimes I'll start in a separate bowl lathering and it just won't bloom right and I'll finish lathering on my face. It's a hybrid of techniques. The bottom line is, try what works best. Expiramentation leads to the best results. Around here, people say "YMMV" which is "Your mileage may vary" meaning that everyone might do something a little differently, and that's okay!
You might come up with a totally new way like hamster lathering or something and two years later a new member comes in and can't make a lather very well and you'll say, "Have you tried the hamster technique?" and you will change his shaving life forever.
The bottom line is that we are glad you are here. Keep asking questions! It's the only way to know. (make sure to search first, in case someone has already had a similar situation - most likely they have) We will be glad to loudly air and tout our opinions as the superior way to go but it all boils down to you. It's like a buffet. Look at all the options, take what you like and what works, and leave what you don't.
Most importantly, HAVE FUN!!! Enjoy being around these guys who have helped countless others like myself get to a good lather, a good shave, and a better overall sense of being from participating in a community and having a calming ritual that is a totally selfish way to pamper yourself that you can enjoy for years to come.
It's a question I wishes I asked earlier. For me it is easier to build my lather on top of the puck, especially hard soaps. So now I buy refills and put them in a Tupperware that is big enough for to build lather on the puck.
It depends on the container. De vergulde Hand soap has a big container in which you can easy lather. But the Haslinger soaps are in a very small container and you have to put the soap in another container to lather.
Thanks all for the quick responses and warm welcomes. I have been lathering with the Col Konk puck in the bowl and will try to lather in a bowl tomorrow.
I use containers like a stoneware bowl with a lid for samples and stuff not in a container already. After i load the soap i just cover it after wiping the excess soap off. I don't bother waiting for it to dry. If it came ina cont. ainer, I just close it.
I primarily face lather and find that my preference is for soaps over creams so I just leave the soaps in their containers they come in and load my brush directly from the container.
Different products require different techniques. The sky is the limit and there is nothing stopping you from doing what works best but yourself. If it means scooping out the soap from the original packing and putting it in a different container then do so
