Sierra Nevada Big Foot Ale

Barleywines are exceptional creations. Get some Stone Old Guardian if you find some...and don't plan on shaving for several hours...

I haven't tried the Sierra brand but our local brewpub puts out a real winner. Old Bacchus Barleywine. What a brew it is. It is aged for a LONG time, served nearly flat, in a small brandy snifter, and is oh so good. It only appears a couple of times per year and I always have a glass. You can get two pour sizes but I always get the small one. It does something to the aromas and concentration of those aromas in the smaller snifter. A glass last fall revealed a layering of flavours I could not believe. Coffee, chocolate, toffee(I know, lofty sounding reviews always say that but it really was there and it was grand), buttery at times, you name it. I have had their barleywine on and off for twenty years and I have never had a pour like that one. You make me want some of that Bigfoot straight away. I have learned not to hesitate when these special brews come along.

Regards, Todd

I haven't had the Bigfoot but the Sierra Nevada Pale Ale is sublime.

This stuff is truly awesome. It's seasonal and it's out right now. If you can, get some.

That is all:smile:

Yes, that is all. If you like beer, get it now if you've never had it. Then again any barleywine is worth trying. :001_smile

Barleywines are exceptional creations.

They are aren't they? It's simply amazing the way the favor develops over time. I mean who knew a few simply ingredients could make something so utter complex in terms of taste?

Old Guardian is great stuff.

A true classic, but I like it better with a couple years on it to mellow the hops. I have some 2005s that are perfect right now. Can you get Lagunitas Brown Shugga? That's a favorite of mine. North Coast Old Stock is another great BW.

Bigfoot usually comes out early in the year. Its been gone from my stores for a few months now.

That sucks. I just found it, I can go back and get more too

Thanks, I'll keep an eye out.

Thanks for the tip.

i love sierra nevada, but last time i tasted the bigfoot ale, it tasted like bigfoot. or a big foot. or both i'm not really sure.

I agree with Emmett 100%. Bigfoot is a great beer when fresh, but it really shines with about 3-4 years of proper aging on it.

FYI, Sierra Nevada's newest beer, Kellerweis, is an excellent interpretation of a German unfiltered wheat, albeit with an American twist.

Great stuff! I haven't had it in awhile now, but I used to stock up on it to get me through the grueling Florida winters (hint of sarcasm present)!

Thanks, I just couldn't tell. We all know how brutal Florida winters really are, with all that sun and warmth. I mean how will you ever survive that? I just don't know...

Yep, agreed on all counts. I was just up at the Brewery a couple months ago and was able to enjoy quite a few beverages. :thumbup1:

If you, or anyone else is interested, I'd be down to arrange shipments of my local beers where desired, within reason, of course. We could trade for shaving gear or supplies or just cash.

As my screen name suggests, I sort of like beer and I like to see other people experience great beers that they may not always find.

Cheers.

Looks like I need to age some of this. I've only had it fresh. It usually resembles more of an IIPA at that point. With a few years on it, a lot of that hop flavor should drop out.

It will definitely mellow with a few years on it. You could also look at getting some English barleywines. They start off less hoppy and to me are much more well rounded when fresh.

I bought a 6 pack of bigfoot a few months ago. Not bad, with the added bonus of being readily available. "Hog Heaven" barleywine out of Avery in Boulder puts it to shame, though. Really, really special.

I have a friend who still chides me for buying a round of this stuff. I quite like heavy, hopped ales, but they're not for everyone. I've not had Bigfoot aged, but I have had Weyerbacher Blithering Idiot at 2+ years. I think the two are pretty similar beers. And it definitely did mellow the hops a bit.
