This thread is for you folks who have made or own shorties to show them off. We want to see how victory can be snatched from the jaws of defeat and how a broken razor might not be the end of the world. Also, if anyone has hints or questions about how to go about making a shorty, this is the place!

You have already seen these but I'll start things off with a couple I made. The first is a Bengall and the second is a Dubl Duck.

I'm thinking short in length.
I'm also thinking that I reeeaaaallly want that them both! I LOVE the scales on them. Esp. the yellow one. It looks like a cute fish!
:w00t:

How about a full side view of the blades and show us where/how you modified the blade? In fact, any straight that has had the blade successfully modified would be good information.

Thanks....this may be an important thread

As those short in length? Or short in width?

I would love for my blade to be shortened. I don't need it to be 3 inches long.

How do you shorten the blade? Is it easy to do?

Ummmmmmmmmmmmmm..........................No. :biggrin1:

Actually it is not so hard. Basically you take some sort of grinder and going slowly grind away the excess blade.

You must-

Always keep the blade cool! Keep water next to you and keep dipping it. If it gets too hot to touch your blade temper is in trouble.

Keep the edge and spine straight up and down in relation to the rotation of the grinder. If you turn you blade sideways it WILL break instantly. Game over.

Use safety equipment. The potential for razor sharp shards of steel flying at huge speed is ever present.

Apart from that, have fun! Chances are that if you are doing this to a blade it has a big chip or crack anyway. What's the worst that can happen?

Okay I seriously want Aaaaall of these ( but esp that yellow scaled duck).
Have any of you ever though of fixin up cracked blades into shorties and selling them?
I think they look amazing. And as a lady I'm a big fan of smaller straights anyway so I'd love to see what difference the shortness makes.

Whenever I have the chance I'll shorten a blade...but..it always seems like most of the time, the chips or cracks are in the middle or near the heel of the blade..and i can't stand the way ground out heel razors look, so I pitch em.

I think about 2.25-2.5" is my ideal length blade. I love the shorties!

I'll post mine later, but I was able to easily cut mine down with a dremel cut off wheel. The key was to rest the blade on a cube of ice the whole time to keep the blade from overheating. It took me about 5 minutes really taking my time to ensure a square/plumb/level cut, including smoothing off the tip with a dremel sanding drum. I would suggest safety gear to the hilt, as well as proper precautions as water and electricity dont mix...this is a big time YMMV:biggrin1:

On the topic of shorties, I came across this dubl duck as part of a set of 10 ($40 for the lot). I was actually wondering if it would be worth it to aggressively work this razor down to about a 4/8 or if I could convert it to a shorty. I guess the reason I wanted to keep it original length is the scales are in great shape (my camera work is just really bad). I could make a shorty from this blade and find a good dubl duck blade in need of some scales I suppose. I need a hint from those more experienced, is it safe to say this one is bound for shorty land or the junk heap?

Heres my cut down Korn. I took off about a 1/4+ inch with the aforementioned dremel and ice.

I would cut it down and rescale it to the new proportions and find a new blade for your scales..should be a real nice travel razor, or one for that little nook in under your neck.
