Should I spring for a custom Slant Sledgehammer?

I have never tried a slant sledge hammer, but I love my current 37G. eliterazor.com (Bob Quinn) is willing to make me a gold sledgehammer slant with a blue lapis (stone laced with gold) handle.

One problem, it is $137.

Should I spring for this without ever shaving with a sledgehammer slant?

You might ask the question "what is the resale value if I don't like it?". A lot of gents, me soon to be included, buy things to try them out, then resell what they don't want to keep. $137 may be a showstopper, or it may be easily recovered in a resale. I haven't seen any of these on B/S/T, but others may have a better idea. I know I won't be paying $137 for a razor, but others pay a lot more for particular ones. Good luck!

In a word, NO.

I've never understood the fascination with pimped razors, to me they are tools and while I understand that appearance may be a factor to some, I just don't get spending this type of money on any DE, let alone a model you've never tried before - call me a Philistine.

However it is your money to do with as you please, so whatever floats your boat!

That sounds amazingly beautiful! Are the heads and safety bar going to be plated in Gold?

Cause, I gotta tell you, that may very well make it worth the price.

+1 to all the above. Tho they are gorgeous to look at. One more thing to think about.... how are you going to feel if/when you drop it and all that pretty pimp-work gets destroyed or damaged? What then?

It is going to be gold plated with a handle of blue lapis laced with gold...

I think if you planned to shave with it but pass it on to a family member or an heir at some point (if that's possible) it would be worth the investment.

I couldn't tell you how thrilling it would be for me to give that razor to my son! But I've got three beautiful daughters instead. At the same time, it would be thrilling to get a razor like that at the bequest of an older relative/friend.

Something to think of...

+1. I would probably buy a regular Sledgehammer Slant and see if you like it. If you like it, it would probably be easier to resell for little money lost, then you can buy the custom version.

whispers...... daughters shave as well, just not their face. (we hope) I really have no clue what this razor looks like but if it's good for a mans face, why wouldn't it be good for a ladies leg (or underarms) as well?

Krissy, you probably don't realize how special you are, and why we're so glad to have you with us. Many of us have wives and daughters who, at best, tolerate our fascination with wet-shaving. My wife is happy I have something that I enjoy, but while she does now enjoy using the KMF shaving cream I gave her and buys for herself now, she prefers to continue using her pink disposable cartridge razors and won't try a DE razor - even a Lady Gillette. I'm not suggesting a nice razor couldn't be passed along to a daughter, just offering an explanation as to why it isn't the first thought that comes to mind.

I have to agree. When I buy a razor nor brush, usually I don't care how it looks. unless I am planning to keep it as a piece of history or something. I just want it to work well. After all it's a tool... :001_cool:

Sort of like pimping a screwdriver...

+1 If you could get a custom razor and matching brush for that, then it would be worth it. But $137 for a shaver you may not like. I'd pass.

I got a loaner from another B&Ber to try, and if I like it then this is coming my way next week. Yep, a gold long handled slant (the first one maybe?)

Did you have to post a picture??

That is almost too nice to shave with. It looks like it belongs in the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
