Should I get an adjustable?

I have a very soft beard and sensitive skin. My Merkur HD Long Handle and my E. Jagger Chatsworth work just fine. However, I have acquisition syndrome and I'm thinking about buying an adjustable DE such as a Mergress or a Futur. I'd appreciate any advice from B&B members regarding the use of an adjustable DE vs. what I am presently using. Thanks.

I have never used an adjustable, so I can't speak to that. However, from a strictly AD standpoint, if it ain't the grocery money and it'll turn your crank, go for it! If you don't like your new acquisition, you can always recoup most of your loot on B/S/T.

One vote for go for it (and let me know how you like it!) I gotta live vicariously through other members at the moment. :crying:

Gotta love the members of B&B. I post a question and I get an answer 6 minutes later.

You should definitely get one. I used a Futur daily and it is a fun razor to use. The sound of whiskers cutting echos in the head of the razor. It sounds a lot like a hollow ground straight. I've never used a Progress, but they are very popular. My favorite adjustable is the Fatboy. If you can track one down, pick it up. I prefer it head and shoulders over the Futur and Slim for comfort, ease and closeness.

I have a quibble with this forum suggesting you get a non-adjustable to start. I think a better way to start is to get the adjustable first, don't dial up at all (or enough to expose the blade), learn, then keep adjusting until you get BBS. Eventually, I think most people here are using adjustables or vintage razors anyways.

So yes, please do. And the progress is a damn fine one.

My Slim and FatBoy adjustable period didn't last for long. Never really found one setting I was comfortable with and didn't want to bother changing settings during the shave. I prefer rotating non-adjustable razors every few shaves rather than using the same razor over and over. That said, you'll never know until you try it. Everyone needs to find the razor/blade combo that works for them.

If you have a soft beard and sensitive skin, I would think carfully before getting a Futur. They are a very aggressive razor, even on the lowest setting. Get yourself a nice vintage Fatboy or Slim. Both are excellent shavers and have plenty of adjustability to keep you occupied for a while.
