Should I cancel my order?

I just ordered a pewter mug for around $50USD, now I find myself researching a scuttle from Georgetown. I you guys had to pick one which would it be?

Scuttle for sure. I think the pewter mug would be nice but the scuttle will serve you so much better. I own the Sara Bonneyman "Moss Scuttle" thanks to a gift from B&B member PatrickD over 2 years ago! The other major scuttle makers are all highly regarded as well. Do yourself a favor and really research them...there was an EXCELLENT thread I believe by BRANDX in regard to scuttles...or i could be wrong on the member....someone should be able to point you in the right direction for that pictorial thread. Enjoy!

Definitely a scuttle (I have a Schwartzweisskeramik) for a few reasons: the warm lather is really a pleasure and bowl lathering creates a better lather and doesn't waste soap.

I've had my scuttle since December and it has improved my shaves because it focused me on doing better prep.

It depends. With the exception of the very large Dirty Bird scuttles, most scuttles are designed for keeping the lather warm. They are not designed for making the lather. I think most scuttles are best for face latherers like myself. I create my lather and then store the brush between passes in the scuttle.

If you are going to be using the mug/scuttle for making your lather you might be better off with the mug, or you will need to look at one of the larger scuttles that will provide you enough room to make your lather. Others can chime in with some size appropriate scuttles for lathering.

Personally, I only use my scuttles during the cooler months. During the humid summer, I prefer the lather at room temperature.

I'll let you guys know what I think. I spoke to Julie and she said that I would be able to lather with her regular size scuttle. Thank you for the feedback.

While a scuttle or lathering bowl isn't strictly necessary, they sure are nice. I got mine from Sara Bonnyman and they are wonderful! I had used a wide coffee mug to build lather and it worked well. The lather bowl I got from Sara is wider and that really seems to make a difference. I ordered the large scuttle and am glad I did!
IMHO, the wider bowl/scuttle tends to allow the swirling brush to incorporatye more air, thus creating a more stable lather with less effort! Good luck with your purchase!

Definitely a scuttle. Mugs are usually a rip and dont make do whole lot of good as far as keeping lather warm.

Any one from the 3 major scuttle makers are good. Dirty Bird, Georgetown, and Sara Bonnyman. All 3 are great, prolly the best of the 3 being Sara's.

Julie has at least 3 different size scuttles plus a brush scuttle. She also has a brown color not shown on her website. I would suggest you get several different sizes of bowls from your kitchen and try them out to find out your preference. Then measure the diameter and depth of the one you like best. You can cross reference that to Julie's bowls to get a better idea of which one to order. While I'm sure you can lather with all 3 of her bowls, your preference may or may not be her regular size. She can also put different grooves inside the bowl, carve your name on the lip, etc. Julie is great to work with and will customize yours to your liking.

I make enough lather in the reg size DB scuttle for 4 solid passes, I considered the larger sizes, but am glad I got the one I did. Julie is the best!

a pewter mug (I always wanted one) and a reg size scuttle from DB. You are right Julie is a pleasure to deal with.

Congrats! He took your suggestion!

LOL, love it when someone resurrects a 2 1/2 year old thread and someone who "knows better" gets suckered into a reply without checking the OP's post date! (Sledgehammer, yea, I'm talking about you! lol) (It makes me feel better when it happens to me!)
