Should I buy the Merkur C 39 ?

Dear friends of B&B lately I am considering to buy the C39. I am shaving 7 days of the week and my everyday razor is Edwin Jagger DE 89 L. The blades I am using are Astra SP, Perma-Sharp Superand Personna (Lab blue) Will I be able to use the C 39 for every day shaving? Oris too aggressive for every day shaving? That's my only concern. Any one of you Gentsis using the C 39 for shaving every day?

When I travel on extended trips (months at a time) I take a 37c (shorter handle version of the 39c).

No problem what so ever using it every day. It is a very mild yet efficient razor design

YMMV, of course, but I find that the 39C does not work well as an everyday shaver. A slant is at its best when it has lots of whiskers to harvest, so I reserve it for shaves when I have 3 or more days of stubble. The more I feed it, the better it works.

Go ahead and get one and try it. If its not right for you, there are plenty of members eager to scoop one up from the BST.

PS: I use Feather blades in my slant.

Depends what kind of beardgrowth you have. Mine is thick and heavy and I use the 39c almost everyday without any problems, I love it. As with everything, YMMV ofcourse.

Thank you Gents for your prompt posts ! It seems that i will order it...and i hope that will be of use, i hate decorative safety razors and shaving brushes in the cabinet of my bathroom, staff that i do not daily use or at least have in rotation. Thanks again.

Late in, but I have tried the 39C and gotten rid of it. I now have the 37C and much prefer it.

Your experiences can be vastly different.

The 37C is one of my favorite razors. I can use it every day without irritation and I don't consider myself to have an especially heavy beard. A light touch is an absolute must!

absolutely. I have just gotten a 39c to try but havent yet.

Since I went from a mild 23c to the aggressive R41 old 2011 head which is way aggressive I was first stunned how close and dicey it got. Over 1 week my technique adjusted and now I am w/o any irritation, close and smooth with less passes. Could not be happier. I use the thing every day.

Id think you will first be a bit surprised but by day 3 totally comfortable.

I highly recommend it. I love my 39C and I have no problems using it as a daily shaver. Blade angle and no pressure are key when using this razor though.

I have used the 37c and the 39c. Smaller hands will prefer the 37c imo but they are both great and enjoy them equally.

I'm a big 37c fan. While I typically shave every 1.5 days (e.g. shave sunday night and then Tuesday am), I find it gives me both a closer and more comfortable shave and my Merkur HD or OC. I might ask what is your issues with your current shave? Not close enough? Too much resistance? 5 O' shadow at 2pm? All of these can be helped with a slant. If you've been using your current set up for a while and are confident that the issue is not prep, technique, or blade, I'd encourage you to try. If you find that daily use with the slant is a bit too much, you can add your older razor back a few days a week.

I think care should be taken when making such purchases. For me, I have to stop for a minute and ask myself why. It becomes very easy to start buying products because they become popular on the internet. But sometimes it may be overkill. Do we really need it? I have an aggressive razor (R41) but I don't use it much. It shaves great and very close. But so does my Merkur HD with a sharp blade like a Feather or an Astra. And more comfortably. I think this is because the more aggressive razors were made to accommodate those who weren't getting a close enough shave with a standard razor. Those who had heavier beards or tougher hair or whatever reason they couldn't get a good enough shave using a standard razor. So someone made a new more aggressive razor. Then an adjustable to accommodate those who had varying types of hair and wanted to dial it in.

So I have come to the conclusion that my hair is average. I have fairly heavy "growth" but I don't think the hairs are very tough or hard to shave. A standard razor seems to work fine. I get just as good a shave (with a good blade) from my Merkur as with the R41. Maybe the R41 requires a bit less work but we're talking about a few seconds not minutes so it's overkill for me.

Some people have small lawns and only need a push mower and maybe a small electric weed whacker. Others have large lawn with big hills and large heavy weeds and they may need a power mower and a stronger gas powered weed whacker.

So I think the question to ask is are you purchasing because you hear it's a good razor or because you "need" one for your beard type?

Just my humble opinion :001_smile

Emanon,

The Slant isn't an overly aggressive razor. Nothing at all like your R41. This stigma surrounds the slant, but really the only difference with the slant is the way the head angles the blade so it slices at a bit of an angle instead of pushing through the whiskers like a snow-plow. I highly suggest you try one.
